Running Watches

mrsjy · 26/07/2020 16:56

I currently have an Apple Watch that I use as my general everyday smart watch. I have been using it for my runs, but anything longer than 15km and it dies.

Could anyone recommend me a decent running watch that will let me to do the following:

  • track the run on Strava
  • sync with Health data on iPhone
  • play music
  • allow me to accept calls etc without bringing my phone

TIA!! 😊

Left field suggestion: will your watch charge on the go? In which case, buy a portable battery?

Lots of them will do the first 3. I am not aware of any running focused watch which will allow you to take calls.

All Garmins do the first two

A lot have music

And I think the Fenix does calls, but it might need to be near your phone - but that might mean you can stick your phone out of the way and not need to fossick it out to take calls. Having a phone with you in case of accident/emergency might be important, depending on where you run.

This is of course all assuming that Garmin ever works properly again !

(major outage, has been going on for 4 days now)

@AuntieStella wow thanks for the heads up - I had minor surgery this week so am resting. How crazy it’s been down so long!

I have a garmin forerunner 45s which I love, It does everything I need but I think you need a fenix for music

Mine is Garmin Vivoactive 3. It syncs with Strava (when there isn’t a worldwide outage), plays music, and I think it syncs with apple Health although I don’t use it so don’t know how easy that is.

I get notifications of phone calls, texts etc when I’ve got my phone with me. I can’t answer the calls or return messages as the operating systems don’t match up (Apple only support with their own watches). Also it doesn’t have any cellular capability, it connects via Bluetooth, so once I’m out of range from my watch it disconnects.

The battery life is great though. I did 13 running miles, whilst playing music, 20 minutes of yoga when I got back and I’m still on 50%.

Internet rumour has it that it's a ransomware attack, but there's no statement from the company

I've got my runs saved on my watch, and I'm hoping that they'll all sync to Connect when it's working again. I set Strava separately anyhow when I run (always use 2 trackers in case one stuffs up). But apparently the number of activities logged on Strava has been well down, but you can sync through a computer or do a manual entry (though manual entries don't count for some challenges/leaderboards/clubs)
