Is it possible to train for a marathon AND lose weight?

Firstly, I would like to point out that I didn't sign up for a marathon to lose weight. I signed up because I want to run it. Losing weight is a separate issue.

Is it possible to do it though? Has anyone done it? How??

I ran a half marathon last year, and I don't think I lost any weight until after the race. Although I think I looked slimmer...

I would just like to hear of other people's experiences and any tips/ideas if you managed to do both.

The way to do it is to work out how many additional calories you need, for the high mileage weeks only

And stuck to it!

Pizza and sweeties might be 'carb loading' but you really can't keep grabbing high calories treats because you've 'earned' them! And remember that calories in gels/blocs and post-race flapjack do add up.

And you need to cut back immediately if you are injured and or have any other unplanned break in training.

Practising what you preach helps too
