Getting more tired now I’m exercising regularly

Is this normal? I’ve gone from hardly exercising at all to doing a walk each day of about 3km, spending half an hour on an exercise bike ( low resistance) and doing Joe Wicks senior workout each day. Have been doing this for two weeks but am feeling less energetic than I was before!

I’m 59 with a BMI of 29.

Maybe you need to ramp it up a little more gradually. Have a think about when you're exercising - could any of it eg if in the evening be disrupting your sleep? Perhaps you might find it better to pattern your exercise days with some doing more , some allowing for rest and recovery as you adapt. Most exercise programs which involve any muscle building (beyond just walking) stress the need for one or two rest and recovery days a week.

(I'm 59, bmi currently a bit over 25 - I've done some fairly intense things like the Shred a few years ago and that was 5 days a week not every day)

Make sure that you’re drinking enough water, I often find that when I’m extra tired after exercise it’s because I’m dehydrated.

Are you drinking enough water but not all in one go so you have to get up to pee in the night?

enjoyingscience · 10/04/2020 10:14

Are you having rest days? They are really important. Maybe cut it down just to the walk one or two days a week, or swap the bike for a stretch session online?

LaBelleSauvage123 · 10/04/2020 10:16

I may not be drinking enough water - a good point. I’m not really doing anything strenuous - the walk isn’t fast, the bike is on low resistance and the Joe Wicks is only 10 mins of pretty gentle exercise.

How’s your diet? Do you have heavy periods and could be iron deficient? Is it just too much exercise and you’re not used to it yet?

LaBelleSauvage123 · 10/04/2020 16:03

6 years post menopause! Haven’t had iron tested. Tried drinking more water today and I think it’s helped a bit.
