Exercising to make thighs thinner

FestiveBake · 10/03/2020 20:49

Despite being a healthy weight, my thighs were feeling a little flabby and un toned compared to the rest of me.
So I decided to try and tone up a bit, I’ve been doing squats 100x a day/different types.
After a couple of weeks my thighs are bigger and my jeans don’t fit there any more? I want thinner thighs not bigger! I’ve actually dropped a few lbs over the last few weeks so why is this?
What am I doing wrong? Anyone suggest any other exercises to try?

You can't spot reduce fat. Your body has its own way of choosing where to store fat - you can't change that. The only thing you can do is reduce your overall body fat. I have always had bigger thighs, I much prefer them now I lift weights as at least they have a better shape and don't wobble as much! They're not any slimmer but I don't care!

You have made your thighs more muscular, so of course they're bigger.

FusionChefGeoff · 10/03/2020 23:12

Squats focus on building thigh muscles - I would guess for overall toning without bulking you need a more specific set of exercises that target the smaller muscles and also build in a lot of yoga based leg exercises that help to lengthen the muscles at the same time.

A quick flick through you tube should find more tailored exercises for you I would think.

Sorry but 😂 at lengthening muscles. Unless your bones are getting longer, your muscles can't lengthen!

You can not lose weight from specific areas, your body will pick and choose.

You could try yoga/Pilates for general toning.

Ah bugger! I need my trousers to fit (which they did before!)

I thought when you toned up, you got smaller. I’m pretty small anyway, just that particular area was a bit wobbly. Nowhere else.

I think I’ll go back to flabby! Thanks 😊

People who are more flexible literally do have longer muscles @MrsJamin - that's what stretching is.

Anyway - would this help OP? https://www.huffingtonpost.ca/amp/entry/leg-lengthening-exercisesnn_4598888/?guccounter=1

People cannot lengthen their own muscles. I.e. bretcontreras.com/long-lean-muscles-oh-irony/ (tldr: The use of the terminology, “long, lean muscles” is aimed at naive beginners and preys on the fears of women who have been repeatedly told that resistance training will make them overly bulky.)
"Toning up" isn't a real thing either. You can increase your muscle and reduce your fat so that you can see the muscle more and it gives you a better body shape, but "toned muscles" is just marketing spiel aimed at women worried about bulking up if they lift weights. Building muscle is good and women shouldn't be worried about it!

Bluntness100 · 11/03/2020 22:51

It’s actually quite hard for women to bulk up but a hundred squats a day is a lot to be fair.

I find running, cycling, and Eliptical has toned my thighs and made them much leaner,, I also lift so do weighted squats twice a week.

The issue I think is you seem to be doing the same thing all the time and well, quite excessively..

Running and swimming have been the best for giving my thighs definition. Unfortunately I have always been all thigh and boob 🙄

Lucy Wyndham Read is the trainer you want.

Some of my favourites:
Lower body workout ideal for pear shaped women
9-minute booty lift
Melt that muffin top
Glute and leg workout

Also Rebecca-Louise's How to get legs like a Victoria's Secrets Angels model.
Her Best exercises for lower abs is also very good for legs.

MrsJamin · 12/03/2020 07:20

You won't reduce the size of your thighs by doing specific exercises, I'd aim for a calorie deficit and general increased physical activity, eg loads of walking.

midgebabe · 12/03/2020 07:23

You have bulked up not toned up it seems. Have you gained weight?
