Hi @Rollerbird I had my induction this evening and it was good! I’m pretty unfit at the moment but it was fun! Focused on doing back and front squats (found front quick tricky), shoulder press and rowing. I’ve done dumbbell workouts for a long time so will take a bit of getting used to using the bar and the proper technique but I’ll get there.

I’m going to hurt tomorrow Grin

roundtable · 13/01/2020 20:46

Have you been back Meg? Glad you enjoyed it.

Rollerbird · 14/01/2020 06:08

Well done Meg.
I'm definitely feeling this January is making me ache!
Post Christmas catch up probably.

Hello! Sorry this dropped off my I’m on threads.

Yes I’ve been back, I’ve got my 4th session tonight and enjoying it. I’ve paid for 6 PT sessions so a couple more to go until the proper classes start. I’m looking forward to getting into the class environment, feels very much eyes are on you in the one to one sessions which i know is the point but still Grin.

We have a ten minute workout at the end of each session and the last one comprised of burpees, box jumps and sit ups - amrap and Jesus I felt it, burpees are the devil!

Rollerbird · 23/01/2020 17:32

Yeah - burpees and wall balls - horrible things.
We've got a workout tomorrow for a members birthday that is horrendous.
Emom for 30 minutes. 10 kbs and 10 burpees..... 😱(kill me now)
I did it last year and managed 6 swings and 4 burpees per round!) should improve on that tomorrow. But not looking forward to it...

We did wall balls tonight! Also thrusters, pull ups and some Olympic weight lifting. In absolute pieces right now 🤣

roundtable · 24/01/2020 13:04

Grin think of how strong your body is getting Megs. Well done!

How was the workout Roller?

I've done the class then a cardio based workout afterwards and off for a swim in a bit. I'm hopefully training for a competition but need to see how my swimming is first as it's been a while!

Rollerbird · 24/01/2020 21:23

The workout was actually 8 and 8 Emom 16kg kb
I did 12 kg, and completed all rounds (with less reps - 7 kbs, 5 burpee) in approx 35-40 seconds each . Steady.
Think I could have upped the weight.

What's your comp @roundtable? Would def not be up for anything involved with swimming...

Well done rollerbird. When you do it again try the 14 and see how you get on.

Tribal clash. Looks intense but I'm pleased to have been asked. There's a lot of training/learning to work as a team - thankfully dh is really encouraging of me doing it.

Repetitivestraininjury · 25/01/2020 08:23

I'm sorry but I just had to comment, crossfit is a joke and regarded as downright dangerous in the professional sports training/fitness industry for lots of reasons, the "coaches" pay to learn crossfit over a weekend, so thats probably better than a degree and lifetime of experience then. they teach cheat exercises such as kipping pull ups and dips, they have no idea of correct form when it comes to most weight bearing exercises, I've seen their so called tutorials for deadlifts, etc, that actually made my backache watching it..

Watch a few clips of the Crossfit games and its actually terrifying, the lack of spotters or any safety precautions, its basically a very profitable business for a few at the top, I would regard it as almost a pyramid scheme or your usual American evangelic nonsense.

Anyone with any interest could learn more about exercise, correct form and programming in a afternoon spent on Google. some will come back with its better than sitting on a sofa and I do agree and I get the comradery thing but there's so many better plans out there.

I think the main issue is they do not have their clients best interests, safety and long term health at heart which the absolute number one for any professional trainer or sports scientist.

If you dont believe me do a little research outside the bubble, see what the real professionals think of it.

Anyway rant over and you're probably all going to continue anyway,

Rollerbird · 25/01/2020 13:17

@repetitivestraininjury If you look at general physical skills of endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy. Most sports focus on some of these, but not all of them. Functional fitness is what crossfit is about and covers improving all of the these.

Most crossfit participants are never going to be elite, or compete at all.
(as in any general sport we take up)

It is suitable for the unfit pensioner and the extremely fit 20 something.
Progressive oaching is tailored to suit your individual needs and abilities. It IS preferable to going to the gym or running, etc alone with no idea. Warm ups and cool downs done.

You are right that we will carry on.
It suits in my opinion people who like structure and mutual support. The community feel means people are likely to carry on long term with regular exercise

The foundations stressed are firstly nutrition, and sleep as the key to the healthy lifestyle.

The crossfit organisation itself is pushing the lifelong benefits versus aiming for crossfit games etc more now

I am glad the basic strength and weight bearing elements will help me to get on and off the toilet unaided at 90. And carry my shopping.

Unfortunately in every industry there are charlatans and I actually do agree that it is far too easy to become a crossfit coach and open a box.

However, I did my research. My box has a competitive Olympic lifter as a coach and the other coach has been competing as an athlete years now. The other one in my town I wouldn't touch with a barge pole. I've done other classes where I've been unhappy with the level of 'expertise' too. Pretty much anyone could become a personal trainer/ nutritionist etc too.

Good luck with your rants - maybe go for the ones that you know for certain are offering training that is lacking rather than random strangers on a forum.

roundtable · 25/01/2020 13:27

And like roller, we have over 70 year olds down to 20s. All have their workouts adapted where needed.

Rollerbird · 25/01/2020 13:49

@roundtable our box sent a few down to tribal clash last year.
It looks amazing!!

I'm scared! BlushGrin

Megsmcgoo · 25/01/2020 21:30

From my (limited) experience it’s been nothing but ensuring I’m doing things correctly so that I don’t cause myself an injury, the box I’m at is the best in my region and I made sure I researched it before signing up
