Getting back into an active lifestyle challenge - 30 minutes of activity everyday in August

Hello!

I'm a little late to be starting an August thread, but I've set myself the challenge of doing something active for a minimum of 30 minutes each day in August.

I'm looking to find a way to incorporate exercise back into my routine. I'm actually on holidays for the whole of August, but wanted to find something sustainable with my lifestyle, rather than going through my usual routine of being a couch potato for months and then throwing myself into an all-or-nothing routine, which unsurprisingly is murder on my body and completely unsustainable.

If any of you would like to join me, especially for those of you who are getting back into exercise or trying to find a way to fit something regular into their week, feel free!

My "rules" are that I must do something active, it can be anything at all, for a minimum of 30 minutes each day. I've been trying to vary my routine with cardio, low impact and different kinds of activity to see what I like and to see what I can keep up with once I go back to work.

So far in August :

1st - 6km run, 3km walk
2nd - 8km walk
3rd - 30mins of bootcamp style activity, 2km walk
4th - 8km walk
5th - 5 km run
6th (today) - 30 minutes of abs yoga (from Yoga with Adriene on youtube)

You don't sound like a couch potato!! I'd like to join you. We are on holiday too (UK) so doing lots of short cycle rides which is more active than usual. Planning lots of swimming, walking and some longer bike rides too so I'm hopeful it will all add up to something useful. Every time we come here we do lots of cycling and have great intentions to continue once home but it doesn't happen. Maybe this time it will!

haha trust me, this is going from pretty much zero before hand... Although I have been slowly building up the running over the last couple of months as I signed up for a 10km run in a moment of madness!

I am trying to increase fitness too, currently only waliking the dog, housework and gardening are keeping me active. I would like to get back to swimming once a week and maybe a class of some kind as well as getting back on my bike...

FlamingGusset · 08/08/2019 04:19

Good stuff @Laterthanyouthink! Maybe just aim to incorporate a 30 minute blast of something into your week for a start?

I did a 45 minute dance class yesterday, though it was very technique based so I didn't get the sweat I wanted.

I've just underestimated one of those 20 minute workout videos... Phew, it was definitely hard!

and a if anyone is interested.

Ha! 30 minute blast, I was more thinking of body balance, yoga or Pilates. This is going to be a very gentle increase in activity. Well done on the dance class, I've never done anything like that but sounds like fun.

Howlongtillbedtime · 08/08/2019 20:53

Can I join belatedly?

Summer hols so I have no excuse
Today I had two walks so easily managed it.
Tomorrow I am aiming to go to the gym and get on the treadmill for at least 30 mins.
I have never done yoga but am thinking of giving Adrienne a go. Is this a good idea ?

doadeer · 08/08/2019 20:58

Joining! I'm 6 months post baby and after the pregnancy from hell I can't do high impact but I can do yoga, pilates, core work etc and walking!

I've done 90 mins the last two days so good start! I'll class it as anything that breaks a good sweat!

FlamingGusset · 10/08/2019 03:03

Yay, welcome!!

@Howlongtillbedtime are you a teacher too? Yoga with Adriene is really good, there are lots of different videos and they all vary in length so there's definitely something you can fit into your day. I normally do the yoga for ab strength. I'm very much a beginner and am as flexible as a steel pole to boot, but the videos are still very manageable for me.

@doadeer Good on you for starting back after pregnancy - it's not easy to get back into it, but you have to rip the bandaid off! 90 minutes in 2 days in a brilliant effort!

I went to a friend's dance class last night. It was lots of fun but the choreography was a bit advanced for me, so spent large parts with my legs in a tangle Grin still, I enjoyed myself!

Ah, no takers??

Last 2 days I went for a long walk as my foot has been a bit sore and I didn't want to overdo it. Today, I went for a run, but will need to stretch my hamstrings tonight as they feel really tight and sore.

Sorry haven't posted as nothing to report! I walk the dog daily but have not been able to add anything else yet.

Howlongtillbedtime · 12/08/2019 17:52

Hi sorry this fell off my threads I'm on.
I am still here and still doing so.erhjng every day.
Still haven't tried the yoga but that is my goal for this week.
I ran 5k today without stopping which I haven't managed for a while. Doing something every day is definitely helping.

DH is off work this week so we are planning a walk tomorrow but if the weather is like today then I will get the yoga mat out.
I will be back this time. Grin

Howlongtillbedtime · 13/08/2019 15:38

I am back from my walk.

We managed over 8 miles so I can safely say I have managed well over my half hour today
Will do a run tomorrow . Well when I say run I mean a 5k plod.

Howlongtillbedtime · 14/08/2019 19:46

Me again Grin
I did the first day in the 30 day Adrienne yoga challenge this morning . Felt weird but a bit sweetie than I expected !
I also did a 30 min plod on the treadmill so I'm feeling virtuous.
I hope you are still on track later

doadeer · 17/08/2019 15:05

Sorry for not posting been having a hellish time with baby teething! But I got myself up and out this morning for an hour of sweaty vinyasa. Never regret doing exercise no matter how hard it is to motivate yourself!

Well done everyone 💪💪💪

Laterthanyouthink · 17/08/2019 21:46

Not on track, still haven't managed more than the dog walking! Just life getting in the way...
