Can I just check that Aqua Aerobics is easy?

Like, proper easy Confused

I've joined a gym to do this specifically on the recommendation of a physio and I've gone into it all gung ho and booked classes.

I've not even thought about the horrors of the actual fact I've joined a fucking gym Hmm

Yes, it's great and if you do find it difficult to keep up remember nobody can see what your legs are doing under the water. Just enjoy it.

CaptainMyCaptain · 18/06/2019 15:03

Not that anyone will be looking at you anyway they'll all be looking at the instructor.

Runningonempty84 · 18/06/2019 15:04

Yes, very easy! More fun than exercise IME.

LaurieFairyCake · 18/06/2019 15:05

Oh thank fuck. I've just read online that someone of my weight is going to burn off 400-500 calories in 45 minutes - and I thought bloody hell, that sounds hard.

depends
if it is in deep water then it's hard work because you need to tread the whole time. very effective core strength exercise.

if in shallow hip height water the it's much easier.
you can do it as intense as you want, start easy to start with.

have fun!

AliciaWhiskers · 18/06/2019 15:07

It's as easy as you make it.

I did it for a while as I was injured post marathon. I tried really hard one session, and honestly it was harder than running a marathon.

But you can take it easy and nobody will notice. And it's great fun!

GummyGoddess · 18/06/2019 15:08

I haven't tried it, but nobody will care if you take it easy while you adjust. I promise! Nobody cares in gym classes what everyone else is doing as they're too busy concentrating.

You may absolutely love it, but you won't know until you give it a shot.

orangeshoebox · 18/06/2019 15:10

calorie - yes exercise in water burn more than on land because your body needs to work to keep the temperature up as well as move. but 400kal sounds very optimistic.
be careful not to eat it all back in one go.

LaurieFairyCake · 18/06/2019 15:14

I won't be eating any of the calories back Grin

I'm also really glad to know it can be as hard as I want it to be as I can then build strength over time. I've got a deadline as I had my knees injected with steroids - and that's going to wear off in 3 months.

So I've got 3 months to make a difference to my knees - I've joined the gym for 3 months.

Annoyingly there's no classes that are described as 'easy' at this gym so I'm going to have to ask as I've no idea what Body Pump etc is - and I want to do the easiest classes possible as apart from yoga I've not done exercise for 30 years

Body Pump is a programmed exercise class done to banging music (not my taste) it is very fast and you have to keep up. Body Balance is, I think, by the same company and is a mixture of pilates/yoga/tai chi and a few other things thrown in. It is also done to music but slower and, if your gym offers it, I'd recommend it.

LaurieFairyCake · 18/06/2019 15:26

They do offer body balance so thanks for that - still sounds pretty hard though

OP posts:
CaptainMyCaptain · 18/06/2019 15:28

You can do it at your own level and the instructor will offer alternatives that are easier or harder.

orangeshoebox · 18/06/2019 15:28

do they have bikes and rowing machines? great for legs and core and easy on the knees.

Raera · 18/06/2019 15:29

The council run pools in my area do special classes for people with any physical problems. Called Aqua med sessions. Cost £5 a year to join and then about £4 per class.

RosaWaiting · 18/06/2019 15:32

Body balance is quite easy but pump will be very hard on your knees, I wouldn’t even try that for your situation.

DecomposingComposers · 18/06/2019 15:34

It's entirely up to you how easy or difficult it is. The shallower the water the easier it is and it depends how vigorous you are with the exercises.

I wouldn't have said it was easy though it's easier than doing land based aerobics.

LaurieFairyCake · 19/06/2019 14:00

Well I really loved it. It was very good fun and I made it as hard as I could do - I have no Co ordination in water Grin When she said 'travel' I could not change direction easily.

Pool is not deep so no option to make it harder that way but I exhausted myself by using foam weights all the way through.

I worried I'd be the oldest, heaviest, etc - really not. People were very nice too.

I am now wiped out. And booked in for two times next week Smile

Thank you all for your help.

Excellent! Glad you enjoyed it!

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/06/2019 15:27

Glad you liked it. It is hard changing direction in the water because the water fights against you - but that's a good thing as far as developing your fitness is concerned.
