I am unfit, over weight, drink too much alcohol and smoke....

I have been on a few walks this Christmas and have felt awful, out if breath, aching hips and v hot.....

My NY resolution is to loose weight and quit smoking but I'm now scared i have something awful like cancer.....

Being breathless is a normal response to exercise. As you say you’re feeling unfit so you are breathless quicker than someone who exercises.

Easy to fix really - try to walk for a set amount of time each day even if it’s 15 mins & there will already be physiological changes in your body after a week. Then increase the time you walk gradually. You should be walking at a pace that means you feel a bit breathless but you can still hold a conversation.
The start of anything is always difficult but you’ll be amazed how quickly you feel better

@ComeOnGordon thank you so much. I worry so much about getting cancer that there are times i seem to almost abuse my body rather than treat it with respect. 2019 is the Year i want to make changes !!
Thank you

Pregnancy/ difficult births meant that I needed to build up from a starting point of to the postbox and back (then taking to bed to recover!). A month later and I was building up to a couple of miles.

Hills are good for building fitness. General discomfort (not pain) is a sign that you are working your body and getting it fitter.

Getting out of breath on a walk means you're doing some good Smile, I always aim to try and get a little breathless when on a walk as it means I'm raising my heart rate.

Well done and keep it going!

Maybe have your blood pressure checked?
