What to wear at the gym

I'm size 20 and looking to start going to the gym. What should I wear? Obviously at my size I'm not going to be wearing the tight lycra stuff that the fit people wear but not sure what is suitable for being able to use all the various pieces of equipment

I wear joggers with a vest top and a sports baggy t shirt over that! Honestly op if you choose the right place absolutely nobody looks at you - the times I have noticed other gymers is to admire their hard work - I struggle to get motivated even when am there!

Whatever you like - I wear slightly loose shorts and a floppy Berghaus technical tshirt in my efforts to lose weight, because that's my running kit too, but I see big girls in lycra all the time and it's absolutely fine. No-one's looking at you unless you go to a real dickwad gym. Don't do that.

Leggings and baggy top with a sports bra! Cheap to buy and comfortable! Socks and trainers!

DoveSecret · 13/11/2018 13:10

I wear shorts. Never leggings as i do get too warm. Karrimor from Sports Direct have 2 layers.

Proper gym leggings are the most flattering trousers I have - and i was an 18 when I started! Wear with a long top if you are self conscious.

EdWinchester · 13/11/2018 13:19

I would advise you to wear proper gym leggings - they will be tight, but you can wear a longer t-shirt or vest top.

The will be the most comfortable thing to wear and are a mile more flattering than baggy jogging bottoms, no matter how big you are.

And buy the best sports bras you can afford. I love Enell, but they are stupidly expensive. The M&S ultra high impact ones that zip up at the front are almost as good.

I did mean gym leggings- I bought some from H&M so not a proper gym shop but they are the best and most flattering leggings I own. I'm about a size 18 and they suck me in and make my legs look a nice shape

dementedpixie · 13/11/2018 13:27

I wear cropped leggings and a top that covers my tummy/ bum area. I wear 18 bottoms and 22 top. My leggings are from Matalan and tops from curvissa

Proper gym leggings are good as your thighs chafe less.

MrsSteveMcDonald · 20/11/2018 10:06

I got some gym leggings and ended up with a running t-shirt as there wasn't much choice in my size.

Did my induction last night, only managed 3 things before I had to have a sit down with wobbly legs, hopefully will be able to do more next time

I'm a 22 and wear Adidas leggings with a bubble hem vest top from somewhere.

You'll get stronger every time - I love the wobbly legs!

Wear a sports bra for cardio, with a loose vest or T shirt over the top.

For weights, yoga, etc., add and a close fitting sports vest under the T shirt, in case you need to do something that leads to your top riding up.

On the bottom half - joggers, but try to find a medium weight material and go for a size larger if you're between sizes. Too thick - you'll get too hot; too flimsy: not flattering!

If you have anything but a pixie cut, hairpins to keep your fringe (if you have one) out of your eyes, and scrunchy for a pony tail that's easy to remove and retie higher for exercises that require you to rest your head against something.

That's all I can think of! Hope you enjoy it!
