Ohhh, wish I hadn't got all gee'd up and registered for a 5k run this weekend...

I'm going to melt in this heat, aren't I?

I got all fitness-enthusiastic and signed up weeks ago, with all good intentions - but haven't run for ages. I'm an idiot.

Any advice - should I walk it or try to jog? I can't not finish!

Yes, you are going to melt.

No, that's not a show-stopper.

Plan to jog/walk it ;maybe jog 4 mins walk 1, or 3/3, or whatever you think you can cope with. Jog really slowly. Walk up hills (especially ones with no shade) even if that throws out any planned intervals.

Will water be provided? If no, take plenty. Consider a visor (I hate them, but some people feel heaps better for sun off face)

And remember, everyone is slower in the heat

(I'm doing a 10k tomorrow, and am expecting to be a good 10% slower than the sort of time I'd usually aim for)

Hills?? HILLS??? There'd better not be any uphills! 😰

Walk/run is a good idea, there will probably be plenty of people doing that. Drink plenty the night before and have a cold drink before starting in the morning. Take water with you. I always wear a visor or hat, keeping your face cooler helps a lot. And enjoy!

I've had my porridge
My water bottle is in the fridge
I've got my running togs on
I've tied up my hair
Got my sports watch on
And it's really hot this morning!

Good luck! No idea why I clicked on this thread, I have no interest in running, if I am running there is a problem as it probably means there is a dinosaur chasing me 😁

AsAProfessionalFekko · 07/07/2018 11:48

Today I was that dinosaur!

Not too awful - bloody hot though! I survived! Next one in 3 weeks!

Well done! Hopefully the next one will be a bit cooler.

Sadly the vein on the front of my leg has become swollen and sore, which is a bit of a pita, so I'm sitting with my leg up and an ice pack on it!

Well done! Hope your vein feels better soon and good luck for the next one!

AsAProfessionalFekko · 07/07/2018 15:44

I thought exercise was supposed to be good for varicose veins! Well, at least the kids Mr bump ice pack from the back of the fridge is doing the job.

Looking a bit pathetic is getting me sympathy tea and biscuits.

Well done!! Thanks

Alicatz66 · 07/07/2018 16:49

Well done you ! You have spurred me on to start couch to 5k again next week .. had been using heat as an excuse !

butterflybuns · 07/07/2018 16:52

Well done! I did a parkrun this morning- sweltering and I think I got myself a bit of light sunstroke too. Last time I did a parkrun it was snowing! Not sure which was harder.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 07/07/2018 19:23

I'm just ordering me some proper compression gear as I've read up on it and these seem to be the best way to stop hurty legs.

It was chuffing hot today wasn't it? Loads of men running in sequins and flags!

I have some compression gear - I wait until I see 2XU on discount. It really helps with little niggles/cramps.

If you're getting a lot of pains, might be worth being checked over by physiotherapist or osteopath, just to see if there's an underlying cause.
