Buying a new bike

I'm looking to buy a new bike, to lose weight (I am 17 stone) and to get a bit fitter. Will likely be riding with my husband and daughter on weekends on roads, parks and some off-roading. I was thinking of going for a hybrid bike. Needs to be something light as I will need to carry up stairs. I would prefer a low step through bike.

My budget is around £300/£400. I was thinking about a Raleigh Pioneer but not sure what to look for.

Recommendations welcome!

Lightweight hybrid is good idea.
This is in your budget & well below 13 kg.

Buying a new bike is always exciting Grin

How tall are you? This makes a difference to what might be suitable.

The Raleigh Pioneer 1 is a fairly hefty 14.1kg for £390, but at least you get everything with it. It has 21 gears, which also adds weight. How many gears do your husband and daughter have? Do they use them? I have a bike with 21 gears, I use about 8... Do you have hills nearby?

Do you think you'd prefer a fairly upright riding position, or one where you lean forward more?

I like low step-through frames, I feel safer at the stately speed I cycle. Bikes with horizontal top tubes tend to be easier to carry up stairs though. Try carrying one about in the bike shop, or your daughter's and husbands, and see what you prefer. Also weigh your husband's bike, that might help you to decide if 14.1kg is feasible.

I would avoid Raleigh as their bikes are shite. I’ve had the same Ridgeback hybrid bike for 15 years now and I still love it. It’s light and reliable, with good components. I’d recommend going to a proper bike shop (not Halfords!) and taking a bike for a test ride.
