Classes 4-5 times weekly = hot, painful, stiff knees 😟

I started lunchtime exercise classes in January. I’m doing a combination of HIIT, core, spin, LBT, circuits... I’ve done four or five classes each week.

My fucking knees are rotten in the evenings. I can hardly move after sitting for a bit. I’m ok while doing the class and during the day not too bad.

I’m rubbing on ibuprofen gel, it doesn’t seem to be helping. My knees feel as if they have a fever. The pain is above but close to the kneecap and doesn’t radiate.

Anything I can do to help them? I don’t want to give up the classes.

I know you said you don't want to stop but you would benefit from a rest day every two or three days. Your muscles need time to repair so they can strengthen.

I agree with May, and also you need to do glute activation exercises and stretches to make sure you’re not exacerbating inbalances.
Pay for a one off session with a physio who can show you some exercises to balance you out.

Hi OP would it be possible to substitute one of your exercise classes with swimming which doesn’t put pressure on your knees joints? Are you able to tolerate oral ibuprofen? If so you would benefit from taking a dose a couple of hours before and after your classes.
You would benefit from doing regular exercises at home to strengthen your quads muscles as these make the knee joint strong and able to withstand more vigorous exercise

Those exercises I posted above should be done three times a day in sets of x10

Thanks for replies, I’ll read them properly and reply once I get home.

I suffer with bad knees and my physio said swimming breast stroke was one of the worst thing you could do for knees.

I was told to build up all the muscles around the knee with squats and weight lifting equipment in the gym. You could also try some of the tape that physios use for athletes with bad knees.

Hi MF - do you have a link to those exercises as I can't read them properly, my phone does a funny thing. Thank you.

PA I should mention I've been looking for quads exercises as advised by a physio for knee pain.

I get stiff knees & I use a foam roller on the sides, back & front which helps. I ordered mine from Amazon. It can be really painful to start with but you can feel it easing off.
