So I ran 5k today. Average hr of 185 and my max hr was 218.

I’m worried this is a big high. I’m 40yo....but I’ve read that the 220- your age calculation is inaccurate. That you should take your actual max hr and then the aerobic zone is 70%-80% of that, and the anaerobic range is 80%-90%.

So is it better to be in the aerobic zone rather than the anaerobic zone?

Can you actually give yourself a heart attack by pushing your HR up so much.

218 is rather unusually high.
H-Attack only possible if you've got an underlying weakness (only certain types of weakness).

I'm honestly wondering if your monitor is wrong. Just how old are you, and did you feel like you were pushing very hard the whole 5km?

I get occasional sporadic crazy numbers off of my HRM. You need to stop & take your pulse by hand & see if yours is giving correct numbers.

Zones: I decided the science wasn't validated enough for me to care, tbh!

Are you quite fit already or just starting out on your fitness journey?

As a beginner when I first got into gym classes, if I did a particularly cardio class like body combat my hr would go up that high - and I usually ended up feeling wiped and headachey for the rest of the day. As I have got fitter my hr is lower and I no longer feel awful afterwards.

If you're fit already I reckon lljkk has got it and that your monitor is wrong.

Hr monitor is correct I’ve been double checking.

I’ve been running for a year now but injured myself in July/August and only started running again November time so getting back into it. I go to the gym a lot, about 8 classes a week, mix of spin, BodyPump, combat, circuits, running class. Free weights once or twice a week. I’m overweight which I guess won’t help, bmi is 31.

And yes, I felt I was pushing hard....don’t think I could have done more/gone faster.

you sound very fit which is great. How fast is your 5km? How old are you?

What does your hr go up to in spin and combat? I'm not very good at running and my hr goes higher for that than any other class.
I've finally found someone that goes to the gym more than me Grin I do 8 or so classes a week.
