Just wondering how you all cope with racing in the heat. It didn't occur to me to not go but half way round i was almost wishing I had. I finished 2 mins slower than last year and nearly collapsed after the finish,

Has anyone ever not run because of the heat? What strategies do you have?

Bump.!

I've got a 10k race next Saturday. So scared of the heat.

Get your hair soaking wet & soak your t-shirt completely, too, before you start, if you think heat is gonna be that hard.

I was out at half six for my long run today - managed 11 miles but was hot ! Park run was hard yesterday , I was glad it was my turn to run with ds1 so I had an excuse for being slow !

I agree with lots of water and wet hair , but it is still harder than in the cold

I did a 10k a few weeks back in the heat. It was hard going.

I wear as little as is decent and loved the run through shower.

Start slow, take any water offered (drink small sips and chuck the rest in your head!) and hope there's people on the route with garden hoses to cool you down! Take it easy is the main advice, hot weather isn't the time for breaking your pb.

I did a race today too.

Hydrate, hydrate and hydrate some more. Not just on the day, but leading up to it too.

Also dont even think about getting a good time, just concentrate on enjoying the run and take it steady

The race I had there were 2 options. 10K or half marathon. I did the half and was over an hour off my previous worse. I know people who did the 10K and were way off their usual time. But we all got round in one piece.

Now I didnt say I ran a race. There was lots of walking involved in mine. Did run as much as we can though (there were 4 of us doing it together)

There was a race for life near us today - I felt sorry for folk running- most of whom were "amateur" runners. Well done!

clary · 18/06/2017 22:09

I ran a half in hot weather a couple of weeks ago (not as hot as today tho) and agree, hydrate in advance and on the morning.

Drinking during the race doesn't work for me but I throw the water over my face.

I can confirm that a half marathon in hot weather is not a time to wear your newish running shoes Hmm. Should have worn my old faithfuls even if they're falling apart!

Thanks.

I stupidly forgot to take any water - and there were no extra water stations on the route which was annoying considering it was all on country lanes and there were plenty of places to park a van to give out more. I guess that was why they only provided 4 portaloos! They knew we'd all be too dehdrated to need a wee Wink

No hoses sadly.

Amazingly the front runner still managed 36 mins!! How? Just HOW?

I am doing a half in sept. I've done the 10k there before and it was quite hot. Hoping this year there will be a nice light drizzle or a cold wind!!
