I go early (6.15am) lljkk and really like getting it out of the way. Tough getting out of bed but once I'm there it is fine!

CMOTDibbler · 06/07/2017 20:33

That looks perfect Hissy, but work gets in the way

Have just been for the most delicious river swim with my social swimming group. After 5 hours in the car today for a customer visit, a swim, chat, an wave at the people moored up and the dragon boaters was perfect, and lovely and warm

rightsofwomen · 06/07/2017 22:43

First swim in 10 days! Wonderful.
Odd old men fart arsing about in the fast lane, but they started behaving like swimmers when I got in. Did a few lengths and then the middle lane became free so I slipped in there and did the rest (1K).

Had to RUN to the pool as they are resurfacing many roads around town and I kept getting to "Road Ahead Closed" signs. Dumped the car and ran so I'd get 1/2hr in before it closed.

Managed 40 lengths in 29 mins 12 seconds today. Had the week off work sobern going when the pool is empty. Going to be a shock to the system going back to 6:30am peak time next week!

SloeGinRocks · 07/07/2017 15:04

Am pretty new to this.. am doing 1k in 40 mins 2-3 times a week which I guess is pretty slow... Just wondering how you get faster?

BrieOnAnOatcake · 07/07/2017 17:32

I'm the same time Slow! But usually 1 x week and other session is after aquafit so same speed but 30 mins.

FatGirlWithChocolate · 07/07/2017 18:38

Sloe, I am about the same speed, so it's not just you :) Swim teacher told me that swimming is the only sport unaffected by outside exercise, that the only way to get "better" is to practice, practice, practice. I don't know if I will ever get much faster, but if I could swim more nicely, and for much longer I would be pretty happy with that.

SloeGinRocks · 07/07/2017 20:16

The thing is I'm swimming for various reasons:

  1. Because my knees are shit and it stops them hurting
  2. Because it stops my back killing me (DCs are young & pretty heavy & like to do running leaps at me / have piggy vavjdvetc)
  3. Because I can do it for ages without getting bored like I do in the gym.
  4. Because it chills me out.
  5. Because I here to get fitter / loose weight.
  6. I feel like this is something I can do & enjoy 😊

So I would REALLY like to get better. Am considering getting some improver's lessons at my local pool - or that Shaw Method training - has anyone done that?

SloeGinRocks · 07/07/2017 20:18

Reason number 2 - "piggy backs" bloody phone!

rightsofwomen · 07/07/2017 20:46

Race tomorrow. I shouldn't run this evening, should I? Just drink lots of fluid?

Good luck Rights.

I've been reduced to going once a week due to various things but am going to get a grip and try and go 3 times a week for the next month.

Had a lovely swim yesterday.

SkiBike007 · 08/07/2017 08:32

Had a swift 20Mins in the outdoor pool thurs lunchtime but it just got too busy as it was sunny and even in the lane I just couldn't swim properly but it was a brief break from work.
I like your list sloegin - I swim to stretch out, relax and cross train to running. As long as it's not too busy swimming feeds my soul Smile I can't be anxious if I have to force myself to breathe out in the water. I never thought of myself as an "anxious" person but I'm having a very tough time in my job at the moment which is invading my life and swimming stops it for abit. I've actually stopped counting lengths recently just noting the time and focusing on technique more. I think this has speeded me up as I've been overtaking more folksGrin

Good luck weekend racers and lake swimmers looks like perfect weather for it.

FatGirlWithChocolate · 08/07/2017 08:42

I'm swimming for the same reasons too Sloe. It means a great deal to me. I would love some lessons in the Shaw method. I would recommend "swimming without stress" - they have a blog, and a Facebook page..lots of great tips and articles, and will respond very helpfully if you interact with them...they could likely recommend someone in your area to you. I've gone from Swimming head out of the water, frantically, but getting nowhere, to swimming like this, albeit slowly.

I'm also swimming because of a dodgy knee. I try to spend a few minutes doing knee bends etc at the end of the session.

Go Rightsofwomen! Where are you off to on holiday?

Today I have bought neoprene swim shoes for swimming in the river in case of sharp things getting out - I have socks, but they fall off or flap if I'm not in a wetsuit. I am also now the proud possessor of two lurid swimming costumes for my night swim event - now I just need some glowsticks!

Hissy · 08/07/2017 21:30

Wow CMOt that sounds amazing!

I've not swum for just over a week due to various reasons and I feel so twitchy. Don't think I can until possibly Tuesday. I think I must be a swimmer now!

BrieOnAnOatcake · 09/07/2017 08:55

Good luck Hissy!

Igottastartthinkingbee · 09/07/2017 09:09

SkiBike007 · 09/07/2017 12:41

Just Been swimming in the sea Grin we had picnic breakfast on the beach when quiet and all went in the sea. It's a known "swimming" spot so a few proper sea swimmers out in the buoy markers, we just did some splashing around it was a tad cold still.

Hope it's gone well hissy

Hissy · 09/07/2017 17:03

Did it!

A tad over 43 mins. Got a massive stress headache after 10 mins, only started to lift half way down, when I could see the finish in the distance.

It was a bit gruelling, I had the lovely boyf badgering me all the way, which either puts him as supportive, or very brave indeed.

I did actually punch him really hard in the warm up area! Didn't mean to, he swam into the gap I was aiming to get a warm up swim in...

Next time we'll do it continuous front crawl, I'll hopefully vanquish the demons and get a time in the 30s.

I'm not going to give this up, it will be nice when I have conquered my fears.
