Do you have access to a rowing machine? I've also got a few hip issues at the moment so trying to reduce mileage. I do 2 ergo's a week. I find it very non-aggravating and has an added upper body benefit.

Thinking about joining a gym so may be able to use rowers - what changes have you seen since you started using one?

To be honest, I've always used ergos- I used to row in college and that was 20 yrs ago, so I've erg'd on and off every since. It's difficult therefore to pinpoint a change. The main benefit is that it involves resistance so better for muscle development and it's a whole body exercise so your arms get in on the action.

One word of warning: If you do go for it, look on you tube for proper technique and then video yourself doing it to compare. Most people's technique is, frankly, terrible- they bend their knees too early on the way forward so have to haul the chain over the top to compensate. Your legs should be straight until your hands are already past your knees.
