Anyone use skipping (with a rope) as a form of exercise

I did consider myself to be pretty fit for my age (51). I go to the gym 3 times a week and do 15 mins on X Trainer keeping above 60 rpm then I do some weights then I finish off with a 30 min run on the treadmill - usually doing just over 3.5 miles.

A little bit of weight has crept on recently so I have been trying to do a bit more. Can't spend any more time in the gym so I ordered a skipping rope and thought that now the weather is better, I could skip on the patio when I have a few mins spare.

Have gone out for the 1st time today and only managed 60 skips (single jump) and felt knackered. Have just been and done another 60 and again couldn't have managed any more. Apparently I need to skip for 5 mins just to burn 50 calories so this is going to be a long job!

Anyone got any tips on how to make this easier or is it just a case pf perserverence?
