Cramp like pains in my feet while running - why?

I've recently started doing Couch to 5k in an attempt to get a bit fitter and shift a few stone pounds. I'm pretty crap but the worst bit is the pains I get in my feet when I run. They feel similar to cramp and are really uncomfortable although they ease off when I get home.

I wondered if it was my trainers which were pretty old so I went to a proper running shop yesterday, had my feet and running technique if you can call it that analysed and bought a pair of decent new supportive ones, but when I ran this morning the pains were worse than ever.

I don't want to give up on this so soon but it's bloody painful, what on earth could be causing it? Googling only seems to bring up serious injuries and I don't think its that as a) my feet feel ok the rest of the time and b) I honestly don't think I've done enough to injure myself.

Google plantar fasciitis and see if that sounds familiar?

I used to suffer quite badly but now am very careful about wearing properly supportive shoes at all times, and doing regular foot flexes and ankle rotations to prevent pain.

Try & stretch out your IT band after running. Google IT band stretches, tightness can affect your feet.

If you've only just got properly supportive shoes (presume we're talking pronation correcting) then this will slightly adjust how your feet.move and where they make.contact with the shoe. It may ache initially but is much better for you long term.

Did you ever wear braces as a child? Think of it like having the wire adjusted. Aches initially and then settles down. If it doesn't ease then definitely check it out but give it.time first.

Its worth checking your lacing - if my laces are too tight on the top of my feet I get crampy pain.

It's be great if it was something as simple as lacing although if it is that I'll regret spending £55 on new trainers! Suspect I just need to stretch more though as I am pretty unfit, thanks for all the suggestions.

I get crampy or even numb feet when I'm running if I tie the laces too tight, so definitely play around with that. And don't regret spending the money on good runners, they and a good sports bra are your only investment for c25k and both will be worth every penny in the long run! (excuse the pun)
