I need a fail-safe running sock, one with padding high up to protect the back of my heel, and absorbent enough to prevent the blister i got on the sole of my foot (between big and second toe, ouch) at half-marathon distance

have so far been using karrimor compression socks with most success, but got blisters for first time, and not looking forwards to getting those again as am ramping up the miles now ready for VLM

any suggestions, please?

I wear x socks. They are pricey but very good. I bought mine when sweatshop had a 3 for 2 offer. They've been going a good couple of years and still fine.

I have also been quite happy with hilly double layer socks but they didn't last as well actually.

The only time I've had blisters is during the marathon I did. Blisters under my toe nails which I eventually lost

I do wear trainers with plenty of room in the toe box too, think that helps.

I love my thousand mile fusion socks

thanks, Doyou

just checking those out, they do have some great reviews.

my running shoes are plenty roomy up front, and very snug on the heel (hence the extra padding there) and apart from the mystery blister, i love them!

I don't need to wear compression socks now, as have invested in some ShockAbsorber full length tights. Will probably wear those for VLM as they are so comfortable and light, just the feet let me down.

I see the marathon socks come in shoe sizes, do you order your normal shoe size or your running shoe size?

Normal foot size.

Good luck with the VLM. It's an amazing event.

i'm so excited, Doyou

to think i only started running 18mths ago, and entered the ballot thinking no way would i win a place Grin

did my first half marathon race at silverstone on sunday and loved every minute of it (until i got the blister) and even then i ignored it and finished in 2hrs 33

I wear either 1000 mile socks or Hilly ones, always v comfy and no blisters so far, touch wood!

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 19/03/2015 15:22

Oh, exciting! I got a place the first time of entering the ballot tooGrin

It really is an incredible day, just like a 26.2 mile procession that you are a part of. I wouldn't do it again but I'm so glad I've had the experience.

I must admit I had no idea I had blisters until I got back to the hotel and took my trainers off. Dh had to go and buy plasters because I'd forgotten to bring them and I couldn't walk in my sandalsHmm So best advice is pack lots of blister plasters for afterward.

My other piece of advice is to be very clear where you are planning to meet people after. DH and the dses planned to meet me under the trees in Horse Guards parade, they stick letters on them. It was packed to the rafters though and the mobile network was overloaded so it took forever for us to get in contact.
