Hi have just been to the gym and been advised that if would be good if I bought a heart rate monitor.

Does anyone use a heart rate monitor and what would you recommend or what should I look for?

My DH uses a Garmin. It's paired with a fitness watch.

You can either get one which uses a chest strap - either independently or pairing with a watch like a garmin, or there are a (small) number which work from your wrist only.

I believe the chest ones are a bit more accurate, but the trade off is wearing it round your chest (I have big boobs, I know it would never stay put! Grin)

I guess the question is why has someone said a HRM would be good? I have one, but only as I want to up my cycling and running game, and the training plans are often based around heart rate zones where you do intervals to really push your body.
Mine is linked to my Garmin

I have a Jabra Sport Pulse wireless earphone set.

It uses your pulse in your left ear to give a heart rate readout and it's much more accurate than watch-type devices or chest straps. You can set it to help you work out in different heart rate zones, which is very good for building fitness and endurance, and for weight loss. Plus it's an amazing set of wireless earphones! Pricey, but worth it IMHO.

I have had a programme designed for me as I want to increase my average running pace. Some of my running session will be interval training session. Some will be long sessions and I have been advised to run at 60-80% of my maximum heart rate hence the need to buy a heart rate monitor.

I only have small boobs so a chest strap won't be a problem!
