Would yoga or pilates help me build muscle?

I am slim but have hardly any muscle tone. I think a bit of it is just how I am made but I would like to build muscle and strength. I don't want to do anything that burns a high number of calories because if I lost weight I would be underweight. Also I am hypermobile and my joints are easily damaged so I don't want much impact.

I am just wondering whether yoga or pilates, if I did it nearly every day, would make any difference to my body and which would be best?

Either one would build muscle tone. This video might be a good place to start.

Pilates is an excellent exercise for hypermobility although do take it easy until you know what your body can take - there are leg exercises that I can't do (instructor gave me modified ones) as it dislocates my dodgy hip (I also have hypermobility and managed to screw up my right hip with some badly thought out digging in MILs garden!)

I like Yoga and did it for many years with no issues but I have heard it's not recommended? I assume because it's too easy to overstretch joints.

Out of the two, I'd say from my experience Pilates would work better at building muscle but that really is just ime.

Cool, thanks. The other thing I thought of was weight-lifting of some kind but not really sure where to go there...

I would go for Pilates over yoga in your case, particularly for building core strength but also safer with hypermobility.
Some weights work would be a more efficient way of building some muscle though..

you'd probably be better doing a weights class at the gym ( one of the ones with a barbell) I find that's been the best for building muscle and toning for me and I've been doing pilates for 3 years
