How long do running shoes last?

I have a pair of running shoes from about 2005 (sporadic use, if I'm honest). They still seem comfortable enough etc but I was wondering if there is a point where you should be thinking about replacing shoes.

I've heard every 1000 miles is the general rule of thumb

FruitBasedDrinkForALady · 05/08/2014 01:23

My bootcamp instructor gave out to me a couple of weeks ago because my runners are a year old. My defense was not helped by one of the others collapsing an arch in the class in her 3 year old shoes... Apparently 6 months is the rule of thumb unless they are decorative.

Ah, good to know.

Perhaps I'll pop along to Runners Need in the Autumn.

I was told 5-600 miles, and not by the Proclaimers! I would definitely replace ones from 2005 for running (but keep them for gardening).

BikeRunSki · 05/08/2014 14:05

About 300 miles for me.

Sidge · 05/08/2014 14:08

I was told about 500 miles worth of road running.

Even though they might be comfy they lose their support and gel soles/heels tend to collapse.

LizardBreath · 05/08/2014 14:20

3-400 for me. Depends what you're doing though.

Stealthfart · 07/08/2014 08:48

My osteopath told me the rubber starts to perish the minute it leaves the production line so need replacing a maximum of 18 months regardless of usage. The guy in the sports shop (running specific, not a chain store) was somewhat bemused when I told him that!

But I would argue that trainers from 2005 would be nowhere near the tech that you can buy now, companies invest millions updating their products and I am sure you would notice the difference. I started getting back pain when my runners were on the way out and haven't had any since I got my new magic shoes

CruCru · 07/08/2014 09:21

Thanks all. I went along to Runners Need yesterday afternoon and bought some new trainers. I could feel my feet rolling yesterday morning (it had rained here and the pavement had gone slimy).

Ooh exciting, what did you get??

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 07/08/2014 14:57

When the soles where out. But then I wear minimalist shies ;-)

Wear & shoes Blush

CruCru · 07/08/2014 15:02

I got Brooks Adrenaline GTS 14 (men's).

I love my new trainers. I ran today and had no knee pain.

Great news - hopefully a simple (if expensive) solution. But then there aren't many other costs associated with running, except buying kit is fun!

CruCru · 08/08/2014 15:34

Yeah they were £105 but I'm not certain that is super expensive for proper running shoes.
