I currently do two / three nights a week on a cross trainer but was also thinking of taking up swimming again to add some variety to my exercise regime.

Can anybody offer me any guidance as to whether this is a good idea / bad idea? How many sessions a week would I need to improve my fitness levels? Any help gratefully received.

Any variety is good. Your body gets used to the same exercise week in, week out.

I reckon 1 gym session, 1 swim and a run / aerobic class a week (if one is available) would be a good regime.

Some sort of strength training would be good as cross trainer and swimming are primarily cardio, so perhaps 3/4 cardio sessions and 2/3 strength? You either do that at home or try circuits/body pump at the gym.
