Where to start with buying a bike?

I am thinking that i would like to buy a bike, just for local journeys. I haven't cycled since I was a teenager and even then never really got the hang of cycling on the road! So I am starting from a very basic level... I will be getting some cycle tuition of course.

Any tips for something that is:

Lightish
Not too complicated
Has a basket or something else for light items
Available second hand

Thanks

So just to ride a couple of miles on the road? is it flat round you?

How tall are you?

Thanks, I am 5,7.

Mostly flat, a few hills - but I would probably not want to go up them as nothing I need is up there.

How about something like this? Its got twist gears (really easy to change as you keep your hand in the same position), big wheels (so you go further for each pedal turn), and the sort of frame where you can get on and off easily whatever you are wearing.

If there are any local bike refurb charity centres near you they are worth a visit

Oh my word, I love it! Definitely like the idea of twist gears and big wheels.

It is actually not too far away from me..
Thanks - that gets me started.
