10k with a cold?

I'm meant to be running my first ever 10k in the morning, I was really looking forward to it but have come down with a proper streamer today. Should I run? How bad is it really to do it when you're not well?

Just for context, 10k will be a stretch for me but I was confident of managing it. My previous best is about 8.

I think it depends on how you feel in yourself. I've done some quite long runs with a head cold and been fine. But I've just had a week-long lurgy with a sore throat, hot and cold running shivers and a scratchy chest and simply could not have run! The general rule is that if your illness is all above the neck, then you're ok to exercise but otherwise, not.

I know someone who developed bacterial endocarditis after playing squash with a cold. He had a spell in high dependency and valve replacement. Not saying that is typical but google the risks and make your own assessment

I did it! Feel a bit rough now but not too bad when running. 62 and a half minutes, I'm quite chuffed. Thanks for the advice. Sofa beckons.

Well done! Did my first ever 10k today too, glad I wasn't battling a cold. Rewarded myself with a rather nice ice cream at the finish! Hope you feel better soon Smile

Did you do the Bristol one Strictly?

Well done! I was thinking about you when I was out running earlier and wondering if you'd gone for it!

Do you post on the MN runners' thread? If not, come on over and join us?

originalpiratematerial · 11/05/2014 15:48

In fact, well done both of you!

I haven't posted there pirate, I'm only a recent joiner to the running world. Back in January I had to lie down after a one mile jog.... I think I'm becoming a bit of a convert though so I'll check it out.

Yes do, it's very welcoming and it's really motivating!

Well done! I am thinking of getting back into running and very motivating that you can go from struggling to do a mile to doing a 10k when ill!

Yes, I am continually amazed at how far I've come. I only manage to get out once most weeks but it seems to get easier quite quickly. I am by no means a natural athlete!
