Do you run alongside roads?

I'm nervous to do so! I'm worried people I know will see me or people will laugh at me who are driving past.

Am I being daft?
I know for a fact I can't help but watch runners when I go past in a car so I know I'll feel eyes on me if I do it!

Yes, all the time. No ones laughing, they are just thinking 'good on her' or 'wish I could run'.

I live in a very small town, and theres only 3 ways you can go to run any distance, along the main roads out of town, so loads of people tell me they've seen me, and the postie/bin man/dhl bloke etc all toot and wave. Mostly they want to tell me how good the dog looks though Smile

Yes, people only drive past for a moment. They're not watching you run all the way.

(Although when it comes to running on the road - no. Stupidly dangerous).

Yes, and I worried about it too at first. I just tell myself that none of them know how far I've run before they've seen me...so if I'm looking knackered after 5 mins they're not to know that I haven't just done 10k before they saw me GrinGrin

Chopstheduck · 17/04/2014 07:37

Yes.

I have been spotted loads of times, mums from the school run, ppl from the gym. And sometimes I prob do look like an asthmatic tortoise if they have caught me coming up a long hill or something, but comments have always been complimentary.

And I run on the road sometimes - run facing oncoming traffic, wear visible clothing and be polite to traffic. Repeated drop kerbs are very hard work on your knees! It always makes me shudder seeing runners running with the traffic (on the left) though - you need to be able to see what is coming.

Chopstheduck · 17/04/2014 07:39

And when I see other runners from the car, I feel envious that they are out for a run and I'm stuck in the bloody car!

Yes, I run alongside roads and around residential areas in a village where most people know each other. The only time I've ever been heckled was last Sunday when two people shouted "London's that way" at me. I must have been doing better than I thought Grin

YY to what Chops said - PLEASE wear something bright. It is my favourite bugbear when setting off for the morning school run and seeing all these daft pillocks running round our country lanes in black and grey.

I have a vair fetching neon pink top - they can see me coming a mile off but I've never had to dive into a hedge yet! DOn't care if I look like a giant marshmallow Grin

If I run from home its always on the road then off to the quarry & back on the road home. If I use the cycle track I drive down (its way down hill and would kill me coming back up after 8/9 miles!) then plod along and join a quiet road.

I love it when people hoot at me!

I was running for an hour at a time on the treadmill as I was too embarrassed to run outside (god knows how, so boring!) and was enjoying it. As soon as I started running outside I got put off a little.

I'm going to get back into it next week and go outside Smile
I have the option to drive for 10 mins to somewhere quiet to run but I think it's the driving that puts me off going so I think I will try brave it and run along the roads! On the path though Smile

Have you been back out yet? :)

lazypepper · 22/04/2014 09:35

Yep. Always.

I really don't care if anyone wants to judge me for getting out there and trying to improve my health.

Do you have anyone who can run with you sometimes? It makes it a little less daunting (and you get to have a good gossip)

annabanana19 · 22/04/2014 09:45

Go back out!! I hate running on the mill as its sooooo boring but I only use it over the cold dark winter months.

Its loads better!
