Motivation tips

How do you stay motivated?

I started a running programme a few weeks ago and was actually really enjoying it but I've slipped a bit.

I've started doing some more hours at work so when I get home (I get up at 5am as it is so running before work is a no go!) I'm tired and cold and keep diving into a packet of biscuits :o instead of getting myself out for a run which is obviously very counter productive.

I actually really miss it and for the last few days I keep saying I WILL just go as soon as I get in and I fully intend to but instead of getting home and heading for my trainers, I head for the biscuit tin instead.

Silly asking on here really because I know I just have to do it - I'm fine as soon as I'm outside with my music (and my dog is definitely making me feel guilty, she was loving it) but any tips?

Especially when the weather is pants...I actually love running in the rain ONCE I'M OUT THERE so just being silly. I keep suggesting to myself I go to the gym if the weather is the excuse but I get oh so bored running on a treadmill.

So how do YOU get out there when the biscuit tin and the sofa calls?

maybe if you had a real goal to aim for - like a race - you would feel more anxious about not achieving each training run along the way? and put them in your phone calendar or whatever life organising thing you use?

it also helps me to run with other people, so have joined a couple of running groups/clubs and

Get rid of the biscuits Wink

I exercise at the start of my day, even if it means getting up at 4am. I run or do stuff like Insanity/Tabata/P90X/Yoga etc on an empty stomach then shower, off to work or breakfast. It is now a habit, and sets me up for the day. If I left it to the end of the day I doubt I would bother, nor would I feel the benefits if I did.

Could you leave your running clothes ready in a pile, just inside the house, so that's the first thing you see when you get home (preferably with a note saying 'biscuits must be earned?' Wink)?

Can you join a running club or find a running partner? Or find ways to mix it up a bit- trail running, intervals, hill runs, or maybe try an app like Zombies, Run.
Stick a podcast on your phone or refresh your playlist (keep it quiet so you don't get run over!).
Definitely set a goal, and make it an achievable one. I love having the structure of a goal and a training plan.
Reward yourself with a biscuit for each 5k you do Grin
