Painful calf muscle when running - what to do.

My calf muscle (on one leg) started to hurt about 4-5 weeks ago when I was running. I had it for a few sessions until one day when I had to walk home. I had about 3 weeks off running. Walking was fine but even a couple of steps of running was painful.

I am back to running this week. I did some stretching before hand. Within about 30 seconds my calf was hurting again and I decided to walk home rather than do more damage.

So, what is going on?
How can I make it better?
Do I need to see 'someone' about it?

Any ideas would be gratefully received. I have a 10 mile race in October and am currently only doing about 4 miles maximum.

Poor you! If it were me, I'd go and see a physio.

something very similar sounding happened to me about a month ago I swapped 3 of my running sessions for swimming and the other 3 I used fast uphill walking on the treadmill.

I think I was just doing too much running, now on my treadmill sessions I'm doing 5-10 minute intervals of running alternating with uphill walking, calf isnt hurting but feels like it might if I run for too long

I'd suggest cross training to keep your cardio fitness up and gradually re introduce running a little at a time.
Seeing a physio may speed things up but I imagine you'll still need to take things gradually
