Hi all, Hoping this is the correct place to post.

I have just done my 2nd Couch to 5k "run" from week one. The 1st time I went i timed myself using the clock on my phone so I knew when to run, when to walk etc but it was far from ideal. I used the Nike app to track my run and loved the fact it told me how far I had covered, average speed and calories burnt.

This time I had worked out how to get the NHS podcast on my iphone and played that and followed Laura's instructions which was much easier.

Questions are...
Can I make the podcast play AND monitor my run on the Nike app at the same time and if so how? I couldn't find a way to do it. Secondly, is there an alternative podcast without the music. Laura was great but I'd prefer silence in between her instructions rather than their music. Finally if you are running using the podcast how do you know when to turn round (at the half way point) as I expected Laura to tell me when it was half way but she didn't so I ended up too far away from my car before I realised I should have turned round!

I am determind to do this having not done any exercise to speak of ever!

Thanks Smile

Actually it wasn't too bad - I just kept a slow jog all the time & felt quite invigorated at the end!

worley · 29/06/2013 18:38

Well.. Biwi I was looking for your update to see how your week 4 run went and I realised you are the same bowl who's golden now on the other thread!
I brought my self some proper running trainers today :) as my other pair are just fashion trainers really..
Although its ds2's birthday tomorrow so he probably won't want to go to park to let me run my w4r1 :(

TinaSurrey · 30/06/2013 02:11

Thanks for all your good wishes. After being v ill all day Friday and having had a rubbish nights sleep I woke at 6am when the children got up. Still felt weak and limbs heavy and achy. Thankfully their Dad got up. Next thing I knew I woke at midday!! Cannot even recall the last time I slept till midday. Had a lovely bath & pottered about with the children at home this afternoon. Couldn't resist weighing myself before the bath. Almost 6lb lost in just over 24 hours!!! Wouldn't wish it on anyone though.

Haven't run since Wednesday, still felt easily tired this afternoon and given that I am now wide awake still at 2am (regretting that mega sleep this morning now) I don't think I will run again until Monday. Just hope I can pick up where I left off. If I manage my 3rd run of w4 I may then repeat it at least once before moving on as I feel I will now need to rebuild my stamina.

Well done all & thanks again for the get well messages.

Oh Tina that sounds horrid. I'm glad your husband was around. Hope you recover quickly.

I did wk 3 run 3 this morning and have amazed myself at how far I've come already. On wk 3 run 1 I was doubting I'd ever progress and now I feel I want to give wk 4 a go, even if I don't manage it first time!

I'm really glad of the thread. Its good to run alongside others.

TinaSurrey · 30/06/2013 21:23

Well done on completing week 3 Twas. I am sure you will manage week 4. I slowed down my running for week 4 now the runs are longer. It really helped.

I am going for week 4 run 2 tomorrow morning (not r3 as I mistyped in my previous post) after a gap of 5 days. Just hope I can still do it.

Glad you're feeling better Tina, it's horrible isn't if!

You'll be fine, just take it nice & slow.

I'm doing w4r2 later - really looking forward to it! Maybe it'll get rid of these god awful period cramps I've got atm Smile

TinaSurrey · 01/07/2013 09:54

Yes! Week 4, run 2 done! I need a shower! Good luck Mog. Hope the exercise helps the cramps :-(

Yay Tina! Well done Smile

BIWI · 01/07/2013 10:27

Morning all! I did my week 4 run on Friday, and it was fine. And no shin discomfort or pain, so that's even better Smile

We're on holiday now, in the Charente, and it is blooming' hot! I was going to go for a run this morning but didn't wake up till 10.30 and it was already baking, so I'm going to leave it til the end of the day when hopefully it's a little cooler. Especially because the roads around here aren't flat!

worley · 01/07/2013 18:58

Whoo hoo! Managed my w4r1 this morning. Managed to do 4k in That time.. did think I wasn't going to make it at the end of the last 5 min run but managed it somehow :)

Have a lovely holiday biwi ! hills would scare me!

Forgetfulmog · 01/07/2013 20:31

Biwi you just posted that to make us all jealous didn't you Grin

Worley - well done for doing w4!

TinaSurrey · 01/07/2013 23:03

Whey hey - listen to us week four "runners"! We are really doing it!

OP posts:
TinaSurrey · 01/07/2013 23:07

Worely. Interesting to know distance. I did 3.93k today and 4.02k on my 1st wk4 run so sounds like we are going about the same pace :-)

OP posts:
TwasBrillig · 02/07/2013 08:29

I'm going to try the Nike app on my first wk 4 run tomorrow and see. Going by an online site walk jog run I think I'm only going about 2.5k I think wk 3!

BIWI · 02/07/2013 19:09

Forgetful! Grin

Went for my run today - week 4/run2 - it was bloody hot, even at 10 am, and much hillier than I'm used to so I was knackered when I finished!

TwasBrillig · 03/07/2013 11:54

I feel a bit of a failure today - did wk 4 run 1 but got a big headache and felt dizzy just before the final run. I managed one or two minutes and had to stop :(

On a positive note I RAN for 3 minutes, then 5 then 3 and then a little bit more, this is still much improved!

MittenKitty · 03/07/2013 12:41

good work! - focus on the positive - you ran - amazing - I don't think we were 'runners' a few weeks back were we?

Maybe you needed more water?

I'm back from consuming vats of wine in France - lovely- 3 pounds on - not so lovely - but its all off now.
Am impressed to see the activity on here - its really encouraging.

i did week 5 - eek! - run 1 a few days ago and just about survived - 3 very slow 5 minute runs - but then last night did week 5 run 2 and it was different which thoroughly confused me so look out for that. First run is 8 minutes! - and as i was expecting 5 mins I thought it was going on for ever to the extent I stopped and checked my phone hadnt gone funny. But i did just about do it - the very good news is that there are only 2 runs - so whilst 8 mins seems long you only have to do it twice - and as someone said up thread - sorry forgot who - it all seems a lot better than having to do it 8 times as we did in week 1.

One quick question - those of you mentioning distance are you including the 5 mins warms ups/cool downs or just the running/walking bits? I need to persuade my phone it can run multiple apps simultaneously but would like to see what distance I'm doing with my shuffling - it does feel like a bit of a faster shuffle than it was although its all relative!

worley · 03/07/2013 14:47

I havnt run today :( bunged up with cold.. And know my asthma will play up.. Was planning on walking while ds2 at a club tonight but forgot I also have to go to ds1's school presentation evening.. So nothing for me today.. I may see how I am tomorrow morning and just do week1 to be doing so something less stressful.. feeling guilty not doing it though..
I use maps walk along side get running to track distance.. It also calculates rough calories used up to which I like..
On the plus side I went out for a meal with a nice man last night and felt happy about myself with my jeans being a little looser so that's such a good incentive to keep going :)

Forgetfulmog · 03/07/2013 19:49

Worley don't stress, if you're ill you're ill & it can't be helped. I hope you're better soon though & well done on the weight loss so far Smile

Mitten - eek! Wk 5! I start that on my next run

Did the final run of w4 today - bloody hell I found it hard going!

TinaSurrey · 03/07/2013 21:58

Twas - don't feel bad. You were right to stop if you got dizzy. I was going to say count it as week 3.5 but actually it's way more than that but whatever - see it as stepping stone between week 3 & 4. Hope you felt ok after a drink & cool down.

Mitty - week 5 run 2 well done! Which app are you using as I didn't know they changed the run pattern midweek? I did week 4 run 3 today so my next run will be week 5! Had a sneaky look earlier & it's three 5 min runs although you get a 3 min walk between each so actually a minute less running than week 4 - I will try and remind myself of that when I am about to collapse!

Worley - I am sure you did right not running. I didn't go for 5 days when I was ill last week and I was amazed I was able to pick up where I had left off. I don't think that would have been the case if I had dragged myself out any sooner. Hope you feel better soon.

Mog- I found it hard today too. We did the same run. I may be crazy but I actually think week 5 r1 sounds easier than week 4?! 3 minute recovery is good in between and only 3 runs to do. Or am I kidding myself?

Who asked about distance? Can't remember now...
I use Nike app and start it when I start 5 min warm up walk (so the second I start walking) & stop it at the end of the 5 min cool down walk (so when I stop and finish). Today I did exactly 4k doing wk4 run3. I burnt 255 calories! Good job as just been out for 3 course dinner!!! I am so full up I could do with at least a five minute walk to make my dinner go down!

TinaSurrey · 03/07/2013 22:02

Oh heck!! Just looked into week 5 after the above comment from Mitty. Run 3 is 20 MINUTES NO GAPS!!!! Help that is scarily soon Shock

OP posts:
Forgetfulmog · 04/07/2013 06:25

Wtaf? 20 mins? 20 mins??? I'm shattered after 5 mins! What!!!!

MittenKitty · 04/07/2013 07:47

Tina, I'm using the zen labs app and just seen it does the same thing. Next run meant to be 20 mins. No way. I did week 4 runs quite a few times and I shall definitely repeat week 5 runs 1 and 2 before I even think about run 3. I can't imagine being able to do it .

Forgetful, chocolate biscuits are always a good solution. Is it against the spirit of the thing to admit I actually took a chocolate with me on my last run. Just in my waist pack thing with my phone and water. Just in case of an emergency....

TwasBrillig · 04/07/2013 08:16

I still have my headache. Grr. Hope it goes by tomorrow, I want to try wk 4 again!

TinaSurrey · 04/07/2013 12:10

I am confused! Look onto week 6...The running time is less! That week 5 twenty min run seems totally out of kilter as after that it goes back to shorter running time and giving you walking breaks. I can't think it would be wrong - so why would it suddenly jump up to 20 mins no breaks then back down again? Hmmm. Maybe I should post this on the other C25k thread where there are runners who have gone beyond this point to see if they can shed any light for us!
