Can I do floor exercises without a mat?

I have an exercise DVD that I have started doing and am really enjoying it. So far I have avoided the abs section because it's mostly floor work and I don't have an exercise mat. However this is the section I most need to do (thank you dd2!).

Can I just do it on the floor or will it kill me? We have laminate floors which won't help Confused

Or is there something I can use instead? I thought about a duvet but wondered if I might get too hot...

If your knees don't mind the hard surface you don't need a mat, as long as its not slippy.

Careful with your back.

I do my ab workout on the carpet, and put a thin cushion under my tailbome for some of the moves that I know push into my tailbone a bit.

You could even just use a towel or blanket on the floor.
