He plays football and wants to increase his muscle mass and weight. He has a gym induction this week.
Can anyone recommend how he can educate himself on his nutritional needs?
Would myfitnesspal app be appropriate for him?
I am not keen on the idea of protein supplement drinks.
Thanks for any help

Hard to put on muscle mass at that age. He should concentrate on his core strength plus cardio. He should NOT be lifting weights as much as he thinks this may help. Protein with every meal as part of a balanced diet will help in the long run.

PS kids get caught up in the "how much can you lift?" and can spend long hours in the gym thinking they are getting "fitter" but agility, speed and stamina are more important. I have raised the odd eyebrow or two, listening to parents wondering why their kids are struggling to run a distance because " they are always in the gym".

a bit strength training using basic compound exercises wont do any harm...I dont think there's any need for protein shakes, a normal balanced diet should be fine
