I want to start running but do not have a clue

i really want to start running but am a total novice. I would let a bus pass me rather than run for it. How do I start. I have heard that a combination of running and walking between alternative lampposts is a good way to build up. I don't have an iPod or IPhone so I can't download apps ( don't think running with my IPad Is practical). Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Hi, you are right, alternating running and walking is a good idea. Have you seen the Couch to 5k threads on here? It is a programme that builds you up from one minute runs to 30 minute runs over 9 weeks. Ideally you need an ipod or MP3 device to listen to the podcasts on, but you could do it manually with a watch or pedometer.

Here is a link to one of the couch to 5k websites Couch to 5k. If you click on each week it gives you more info.

Another thread started a few days ago where a lot of people are doing it

other thread. The thread is quite long already but there is some good advice on there.

I did it last year and it is a really good feeling when you can run for 30 mins non stop. Good luck

I know how you feel, but posting on a thread is what has kept me going. I've been on this one older thread for the last 6 months or so and it really helps, we do still get new people joining in and we are very friendly, so you'd be welcome on that one too (it might not be as overwhelming as the newer one). However a lot of the people on it are a lot further along the path, having been running for a year or so now. it is still welcoming for new people.

I have had so many bad spells, when I have felt like giving up, but the thread really helps. I've just been out for a 30 min run, no way could I have done that a year ago.

^ what she said Grin. Being on the thread has really helped, even when not running Grin, as there's always someone to spur you along.
