Hillwalking with a toddler - any equipment out there to make it possible?

We used to do a lot of hillwalking, but scaled right back 4 years ago when I was very pregnant. Now DS1 is 3 and a bit, we want to get back up there with the three DCs. The elder 2 are 11 and 13, so no problem, but is there anything out there that makes it possible. We've tried backpacks but it's been pretty miserable as he's a big boy - maybe we've been used the wrong type, or maybe we're just being unrealistic?

Any advice gratefully received....

This thread was helpful www.mumsnet.com/Talk/other_subjects/885823-Encouraging-children-to-go-on-walks-any-tips

My 3 year old can manage a 2-3 mile hill walk, any further and I'd use an ergo sling (if I hadn't donated it to my sister) & walking poles to help spead the load.

I can only suggest walking with the extended family & friends with lots of people to pass the kid too. We did Croyde to Woolacombe N. Devon with DH, Sis, BIL two grown up nephews & GodFather. He walked when he could and nobody would pick him up when it was easy then passed him around at various points. Very good walker now 5 years
