Good King BBBBaBoris looked out,
on the Port of Dover,
There the shit lay round about,
Deep around the stopover;
Brightly shone the moon that night,
Tho’ the frost was cruel,
When a poor man came in sight,
Delivering stuff for Yule.

“Bugger SAGE and stand by me,
We've all stuff that needs selling,
Yonder peasant, who is he?
Where and what his dwelling?”
“Sire, he lives a good league hence,
The other side the EU;
Though relations maybe tense,
He's trying to get goods through.”

“Oh god I need another wine,
I have many crisis to consider:
We must tell them its all fine,
I must not be seen to dither.”
SAGE and monarch, forth they went,
forth they went together;
Through the nation's sad lament
and really crappy weather.

“Sire, our plight is darker now,
And the covid transmission stronger;
Fails my heart, I know not how;
To keep Tier 2 much longer.”
“Soon we can drop their wage.
And treat them all more coldly
In Britain's new chrony age
A time to rob more boldly.”

In their master’s steps they trod,
On the quest to get minted;
Each and every last sod
Needs to be fingerprinted.
Therefore, Christian men, be sure,
DWP claimants are processing,
Ye who now will bless the poor,
God its all so depressing.

@DrBlackbird I don't think the EU would have linked fishing to energy for no reason.

Boris certainly doesn't care about mackerel but I think a. The EU realised the UK were going to use it as an ongoing negotiating tactic & b. Brexiters have turned it into a territorial symbol far in excess of its actual value either to the UK or even Brexiters themselves. Macron is more sincerely committed to defending French fishing, even if only as he will be facing election in '22.

bornatXmastobequiet · 30/12/2020 22:24

I suspect that Johnson / ERGers couldn't care less about fishing and are therefore not worried about possible denial of energy. The latter will never happen because the former will be dropped as an issue.

Exactly. None of them ever cared a jot about fishing except as a wonderful patriotic stunt to get the plebs all irked. Farage typifies the attitude. Never did a thing for UK fishing when he was an MEP, didn’t even turn up to committee meetings, yet hijacked the whole fishing industry to his own ends. They’ve been taken for mugs, sold down the river, cranked up on their own winches. This is the beginning of the end for them, cut off from their markets and unlikely to get any support from government at all.

HappyWinter · 30/12/2020 22:33

Finished skimming the LabourTogether report, I see what Louise and LQ mean, the last bit is weak, no real strategy for reaching lost voters from former heartlands or listening to them.

DrBlackbird · 30/12/2020 23:42

Tatiana I agree that the EU / Macron might care, but not Johnson or the ERG whatever they may have claimed during the Brexit rhetoric. It makes me nervous that the ERG so readily proclaimed their support for it. What's in that deal?

tava63 · 31/12/2020 00:20

What a farce in both Houses today. The Bill has now been passed at record pace. A Bill that not one member of either Houses will have either read or processed. Now it is off for Royal Assent. Another low point in Parliamentary history delivered by our PM. Here's the link to the damning assessment of the process by the Hansard Society published today. I listened to some of the speeches in both Houses - two starkly different perspectives - and whilst our history has often revealed these differences rarely in such stark terms. www.hansardsociety.org.uk/blog/parliaments-role-in-scrutinising-the-uk-eu-trade-and-cooperation-agreement

TatianaBis · 31/12/2020 00:33

If Johnson wasn’t going to use fishing in some way the EU simply would not have bothered to tether energy to it. Why would they? They’re not stupid. They’ve effectively neutered him on that issue. As we know he doesn’t care about fishing he must have been trying to use it in some other way.

I wish people valued being 'mongrels' more - purity of 'race' is such a poisonous concept.
'purity' opens the door to making people feel less worthy, but also offers an apparent haven / defensible position from which to stand up for yourself if you feel otherwise beleaguered.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 31/12/2020 09:34

R4 this morning referred to the "Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) with the EU (the ‘future relationship treaty’)" as "Boris' Brexit Deal".

Sheesh.
Angry

Peregrina · 31/12/2020 09:35

It makes me nervous that the ERG so readily proclaimed their support for it. What's in that deal?

I fully expect them to behave in the way they did with the Withdrawal Agreemtent - vote to rip up the provisions they had voted for months earlier, because when they bothered to read them, they didn't like them. International Treaty, what's that? The have already spotted a clause which says that if the rules aren't being followed, either side could terminate the agreement.

Peregrina · 31/12/2020 09:49

"Boris' Brexit Deal".

To me, this is good, because if it goes tits up, his name is firmly attached. He will try to use Covid to spread the blame around, he will blame those Labour MPs who voted for it, it will be everyone else's fault but his, so this does help to nail it to him.

YY to 'Boris' Brexit Deal' - nails it to him.
Like 'Cameron's Cowardly 'advisory referendum' (which got us here)
less snappy, but important to note who did what, in the years to come.
Starmer not abstaining won't be forgotten (by some of us) either.

That BBC couples 'therapist' should be ashamed of themselves.
So should the Beeb, but we all know how shameless they are, sadly.

I thought that when I read it.

It's all kinds of patronising, psychobabblicious bollocks.

Once the Beeb has finished fucking right off, it can fuck off some more.

prettybird · 31/12/2020 10:29

You must have got further than me think I managed two sentences Wink

Peregrina · 31/12/2020 10:31

Dear God, what rubbish. Especially the bit about the EU citizens who might feel rejected and doubt their self worth. Much more likely that those who are free to do so will clear off home.

I really hope these threads keep going - as Brexit isn't over.....it's only just began and I want to understand it's effects...

Chersfrozenface · 31/12/2020 10:38

Also on the BBC, a headline reads "Sir Keir Starmer: UK's best years lie ahead". The actual quote is "..I believe that our best years are still to come."

OK, he does say that his belief is based on a "hope" and a "vision" - such strong foundations for anything, don't you find?

To resurrect an old expression, is he on glue?

Peregrina · 31/12/2020 10:44

We do need hope and we do need vision. For example, the NHS would not have got off the ground without vision, nor the Welfare state without the foundation of the Beveridge Report, BUT, they need to be grounded in reality. It needs to be more than talk.

I can see that Starmer was in a bind, but really, he needs to shut up and let the Tories own this.

It makes a welcome change from their "It's so great to have a crippling lifelong disability" stories that make it seem being unable to walk is a lifestyle choice though.

prettybird · 31/12/2020 10:48

I'm certainly planning on continuing to contribute to these threads Smile

The refugee camp is a bit cold at the moment Xmas Wink but the braai/fire pit that dh was setting made for very pleasant socially distanced drinks and snacks with SIL and BIL. Xmas Smile

I do wonder if the UKs "6 month" period of implementation is meant to somehow work as a tactic to try and "shame" the EU into a reciprocal "don't ask don't tell" sort of arrangement ????

Because you know the UK press will scream how "nasty" the EU is for enforcing the new deal from day one ... not like the good old nice British folk, who aren't so hung up on it.

It would be like the UK was Dylan to the EUs Florence ...

prettybird · 31/12/2020 11:01

The deliberately obtuse UK press will conveniently ignore the inconvenient fact that the EU can't just wave through UK goods - or it would have to wave through goods from all over the world Hmm

SabrinaThwaite · 31/12/2020 11:06

And the fact the UK waving through EU goods but not others' is actually contravening WTO rules.
