Good King BBBBaBoris looked out,
on the Port of Dover,
There the shit lay round about,
Deep around the stopover;
Brightly shone the moon that night,
Tho’ the frost was cruel,
When a poor man came in sight,
Delivering stuff for Yule.

“Bugger SAGE and stand by me,
We've all stuff that needs selling,
Yonder peasant, who is he?
Where and what his dwelling?”
“Sire, he lives a good league hence,
The other side the EU;
Though relations maybe tense,
He's trying to get goods through.”

“Oh god I need another wine,
I have many crisis to consider:
We must tell them its all fine,
I must not be seen to dither.”
SAGE and monarch, forth they went,
forth they went together;
Through the nation's sad lament
and really crappy weather.

“Sire, our plight is darker now,
And the covid transmission stronger;
Fails my heart, I know not how;
To keep Tier 2 much longer.”
“Soon we can drop their wage.
And treat them all more coldly
In Britain's new chrony age
A time to rob more boldly.”

In their master’s steps they trod,
On the quest to get minted;
Each and every last sod
Needs to be fingerprinted.
Therefore, Christian men, be sure,
DWP claimants are processing,
Ye who now will bless the poor,
God its all so depressing.

No Tory govt would slash soc'l/envt'l rights or pump billions into industry.

Erm, I think that's exactly what this Tory government was wanting to do!

HappyWinter · 24/12/2020 20:07

I'm glad we have a deal, it's not as good as what we had. Sounds like it will take a little while for people to realise what we have lost.

Oh lord, what does Laura Kuennsberg see in Boris? How could you even go there? Shock

bornatXmastobequiet · 24/12/2020 20:18

Oh lord, what does Laura Kuennsberg see in Boris? How could you even go there?

All political journalists are groupies to a degree and she has the misfortune to be female, naive in the way only very intelligent people can be and star struck.

It didn't used to be like that. But now they aren't reporters, they just want access so they can be commentators.

It's why our media has become so shit.

TuxedoPanther · 24/12/2020 20:33

More plastic tat for Xmas, that the kids will more than likely break and discard by New Year.

ListeningQuietly · 24/12/2020 20:43

Nowt on telly tonight so we are watching the Top Gear Middle East special

Happy Christmas folks Xmas Grin

TuxedoPanther · 24/12/2020 20:45

@Tanith

"I was certain BJ was after ND." He was. They all were. Nigel Farage made that clear.

That was before the chaos at Dover.

Well played, France!

Definitely. Macron was bad cop by closing the Channel and Merkel was good cop getting Lufthansa to air freight in 80 tonnes of supplies.

‘Twas an amuse bouche of things to come. And it beat Boris at his own game of silly buggers.

Still a shitshow to come but the edge is off, at least for a bit.

They’re going to try and ram through an awful lot with no higher court.

Think the state pension is going to come under sustained attack soon, as link to NI already broken, no higher court to appeal to and “paying for Covid” is going to be the new mantra for justifying swinging cuts. The generational war has being stoked for long enough now that given a (false) choice between NHS and state pension, people are conned and panicked into “Save Our NHS” at any cost.

Pepperwort · 24/12/2020 20:49

The demographics of the leave vote support a return to the EU eventually. I’m watching Muppet Christmas Carol, and trying not to notice when it reminds me of current affairs. Merry Christmas to one and all.

Pepperwort · 24/12/2020 20:50

Definitely looks like a strong armed minimal treaty. Vive la republique.

Eve · 24/12/2020 21:45

@TuxedoPanther

Pension and workers rights - all under the guise of getting people into work, make it easier for employers to employ people. Will have millions on zero hour contracts soon.

Peregrina · 24/12/2020 22:03

No Tory govt would slash soc'l/envt'l rights or pump billions into industry.

Only the second part is correct - the first part is exactly what they want to do.

Peregrina · 24/12/2020 22:34

Do people think that Macron closing off the border stopped No Deal? I genuinely don't know.

TokyoSushi · 24/12/2020 22:37

I think it gave it a little helping hand @Peregrina - a glimpse into the no deal future was very grim indeed. Possibly a stroke of genius by Macron, possibly pure coincidence.

RedToothBrush · 24/12/2020 22:41

@Peregrina

I think it certainly focused minds. Anyone seriously considering it, freaked. And i think there were some. But maybe the decision was made more when Cummings went. Johnson was on board until then. Then was part of the fallout.

Peregrina · 24/12/2020 23:00

Reading the summation of the Deal is very different to the bombast posted by Johnson.

It made me think of the saying "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush." The EU has the bird in the hand; Johnson's piffle was definitely two in the bush and how we might do this, and we might do that.

I was pleased to see a commitment to the Horizon 20 programme still, if we pay our dues!

Elephant4 · 24/12/2020 23:00

Do you know that for sure - or are you just surmising - about LK? And why on earth does the BBC continue to employ her as their main political journalist when she is so obviously biased?

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 24/12/2020 23:03

@Peregrina

Do people think that Macron closing off the border stopped No Deal? I genuinely don't know.
I think it brought home the reality of what it might look like and what a shitshow it would be.
Elephant4 · 24/12/2020 23:09

It can't have been Macron closing off the border.

This can't have been brought together in the last couple of days surely?

I reckon both Boris and the Ursula had planned to finalise it on Christmas eve. That's why they both seem so happy about it.

Peregrina · 24/12/2020 23:11

bllomberg's summary of the deal.Elsewhere I read that they don't think it's good for the UK.

Thinks like professional qualifications - will need to be recognised in each country you practice in. Now I could see say the German Architects' body recognising British Qualifications now - but only as far as they remain in step with German ones.

AuldAlliance · 24/12/2020 23:26

Have a good Christmas, anyway, everyone.
Am desperately trying to keep awake so I can bung some stuff in stockings before crashing into bed.

Peregrina · 25/12/2020 00:23

I wonder if the EU have really sacrificed all that much over fishing? I read the other day that the EU quotas that the Brexiters bandy about actually included those for Iceland and Norway. Both of these are subject to separate deals. But the UK wanted 80% and got 25% - that seems a whopping climb down.

The other point was that our Government would have the chance to rebuild its industry. Is it going to? This will be interesting to watch.

Also if Scotland were to gain Independence the major part of the fishing grounds would be in Scottish waters. So we (England) would have a few lobsters and crabs caught off Newlyn and Brixham.There is virtually no commercial fishing in Wales.

DrBlackbird · 25/12/2020 00:47

DH and I pondered what exactly Laura K actually brings as a 'political' journalist? As opposed to just a plain old journalist. She never analyses anything at all. Never says anything particularly interesting or insightful. Just repeats what the gov't says but with a frisson of emotion. Puzzling.

Anyhow. It's a deal. Much to mourn. But better than no deal. Happy Christmas to one and all. Xmas Smile

OhLittleBoreOfWhabylon · 25/12/2020 01:07

How long until Johnson decides, having "Delivered Brexit", to leave to spend more time with his family/recovering from Covid/making millions? I think it will be very, very soon.

I wish a peaceful and happy Christmas to us all and hopes for a better year to come.

Faisal Islam's take on "no non-tariff barriers". Sigh.

Merry Christmas to one and all.
