Westminstenders: What the winds bring

The next few weeks are crucial. Eu talks, covid handling, the US election and any other unexpected events (its nearly November, lets face it will probably be the weather).

It feels a little like the car crash in slow motion is about to hit the wall of reality. I guess that just means all there is left to do is to brace for impact.

Squid, I’m so sorry to hear you’re going through this. It’s criminal. I’ve sent you a PM about a (very) small thing I may be able to do.

@colouringindoors

Really hope M&S food doesn't go bust - it's my go-to for treats! And God knows I need them now Grin
Our local M&S was closed down last year. It had been here since 1937.
52andblue · 04/11/2020 14:26

Flowers for Squid and THANK YOU for all you do. x

That sounds genuinely nightmare-ish.

So sorry to read about how tough things are, squid.
Please look after yourself as well as your patients.

Meant to say thank you to LQ, dontcallmelen and Geistohne for the welcome.

Can’t believe you remembered me Geistohne! I’m afraid there less singing and more screaming into the void these days...

ListeningQuietly · 04/11/2020 14:37

Flowers for Squid
Down here its still very normal
we forget how lucky we are

GeistohneGrenzen · 04/11/2020 14:46

squid Flowers I can't begin to imagine... well perhaps a very little bit, because a close friend just told me her daughter and family who live in Derbyshire have all caught Covid and the daughter really needs to be in hospital but refused to go. My friend can't go up to look after them and we don't know what the next few days might bring.

Thinking of you every day. Can only reiterate everything colouringindoors said upthread ❤

DH is crunching numbers. He THINKS Biden has scrapped it. Trump needs Wisconsin and Michigan but he thinks Biden has got them. He thinks that Biden will also scrap Georgia by the skin of his teeth.

He also thinks the House and the Senate are not quite a forgone conclusion either. He thinks Georgia is the key for these.

He thinks result Friday or maybe even Saturday.

But we also have to consider what is Trump going to do if that plays out...

DH is VERY VERY good with numbers. And the bookies do now favour Biden with odds shortening.

My heart goes out to you Squid, no idea how you do it and nobody could fault you for needing more time between shifts. Just thank you massively for being who you are and always remember that when it's time for you, leave and don't look back. In the meantime, wishing you tonnes of good luck to go with all that inner strength and beauty you already have Flowers

Feeling sick at the thought of another 4 yrs of Tantrump, but worried that either way very little will really be resolved in real terms for the time being. The world just seems to be going through something momentous and any sense of invulnerability is being cosmically sneered at! But even just some moral respite for a while in order to even vaguely regroup would help so much! 🤞

Babooshka good to ‘see’ you again by the way now have that song stuck in my head!
MShip that’s an interesting thought about Trump wanting to make a deal in exchange for going quietly (or what passes as quietly for him!)

RedToothBrush · 04/11/2020 15:35

Biden campaign have just said a) they now expect to win b) they will Wisconsin, Michigan, Arizona and Pennsylvania with Georgia a toss up and North Carolina likely to go to Trump c) they will know this by this afternoon US time / midday UK time.

THEN things get interesting...

Really hoping that RTB's DH is right about the numbers. Unless that will bring even worse chaos in the medium term.
It just feels as though no good news is allowed now. Stretching permanently into the future.

RedToothBrush · 04/11/2020 15:38

Via CNN

The Trump campaign is arguing that mail-in ballots still to be counted will break in Trump’s favor. That directly contradicts the President’s assertion overnight that ballots should stop being counted. Again, the ballots still being counted are perfectly legal. The campaign believes they will win Arizona by a narrow margin, as well as Pennsylvania

“We are confident on our pathway. We are confident in our math. We are viewing some of these races as math equations,” campaign manager Bill Stepien said, adding, “We project with confidence because of the math we believe is in front of us.”

He claimed without evidence that Democrats are “pushing to count late ballots” because “if we count all legal ballots, we win.”

Wisconsin, Stepien said, is a “tight race within one percent,” which, he said, is “recount territory.”

In Michigan, he said there are outlying Republican counties and they are “confident in a pathway that includes Michigan.”

In Nevada, “late breaking math helps us in Nevada.”

Lets see how that holds up...

RedToothBrush · 04/11/2020 15:47

DH has just showing me his workings out.

If Biden gets OVER 50% of votes left, he gets Wisconsin, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvia. He needs a higher percentage for Georgia (he thinks thats toss up but could go Blue).

He thinks Biden will get quite a bit more of the remaining postal votes in all those states.

In otherwords his workings out, based on where the votes are, look also indentical to Biden's logic by the look of it....

OP posts:
RedToothBrush · 04/11/2020 15:48

Btw he does think that we will probably end up with at least one automatic recount...

The phrase "hoist with your own petard" is starting to become hackneyed, isn't it ?

A bit like the recent situation where Tory MPs - who have benefited an awful lot from the medias complete lack of nuance and context found themselves whinging about the lack of nuance and context in their scummy behaviour.

pussycatinboots · 04/11/2020 15:51

Something is happening with Pennsylvania and "merging of data" - were they using Excel too? (Sky News now)

DH has seen at local elections, one column being added to the wrong candidate before... on excel.

If he had't have noticed it, the result would have been called wrong!

It does happen. And quite innocently.

Haven’t looked at any US stuff for a few hours - stupidly, I stayed up all night and really had to stop listening/watching for a while.

Has anyone followed the likely outcome of the popular vote? The prospect of a reversal of 2016 with Trump losing the election but winning the popular vote, and what might be unleashed in that scenario, is pretty scary. Though, of course, not as scary as a Trump win.

Thanks PawFives, and apologies for the ear worm!

CoffeeNights · 04/11/2020 16:02

Question. Given if trump gets in this time, he technically cant run again. Do you think he will try and change the rules so he can stay? Cos he gets arrested either now or in four years doesn't he?
