Westminstenders: How many Dead Cats Do You Get In A Thunderstorm?

It never rains. It only pours.

What I wouldn't give for a bit of old fashioned drizzle right now.

4 years on and we are facing a torment of calamities. Brexit, serious political instability in the USA ahead of an election that Trump will refuse to lose even if he does, trade deals with the rest of the world put on 6 week deadlines, anger within the commonwealth, a sick weak dependent PM on the back foot and ill briefed, rampant growing corruption in the Tory party, woke nut jobs out of touch with reality, councils on the brink of bankruptcy and the whole covid-19 crisis.

Johnson had COVID but I'll lay good money he was never anywhere near a ventilator

It's certainly different to what they thought in April advanced-television.com/2020/04/08/leo-not-doomed-by-oneweb-problems/

I think the EU is mighty glad it isn't reliant on US and can protect itself by limiting potentially infected tourists, just as UK stops is polite request for all tourists to choose to self isolate for 2 weeks www.theguardian.com/world/2020/jun/26/european-union-us-visitors-coronavirus

These helpful analysts everywhere. I wonder who they might be then?

It's certainly different to what they thought in April

Yes, from my post;
"Quilty admits that it wholly underestimated the potential strategic value of OneWeb to various State-backed actors" ...

From a different source in May;

"Amazon is among the players in a bankruptcy bidding game with the assets of the OneWeb satellite venture at stake, according to Space Intel Report."

"Quoting unnamed industry officials, Space Intel Report’s Peter B. de Selding says other potential bidders include two Chinese organizations that are apparently acting on behalf of the Chinese government; the Paris-based satellite operator Eutelsat, which apparently has the backing of the French government and several other European Union member states; and Cerberus Capital Management, a New York-based private equity firm with interesting connections."

I dunno - intensive care is quite near a ventilator.

TatianaBis · 27/06/2020 16:59

I don’t think he’s completely recovered either.

Mind you being so all over the place it’s hard to tell.

mrslaughan · 27/06/2020 17:01

Good lord - of course companies would be interested in the satellites. Satellite companies often go bankrupt as they are so capital intensive to set up. So yes I am sure someone can make money from them.
That doesn't mean that they are suitable for what the government wants- the stated aim was GPS because loosing access to Gallaleo...... it's not like sending someone up a mast to change the hardware. I am sure even that is not something that you would struggle to grasp. You are just trying to muddy the waters.
Last time I checked the gov weren't running an investment fund.....I would prefer that they spent money on things the country needed..... rather than speculative projects - which let's face it - they have no experience in. Cummings one attempt was an utter failure

JeSuisPoulet · 27/06/2020 17:14

So Clav are you trying to tell us Cummings really IS an evil genius who knows more about satellites than the entire industry here in UK who were confused?

Sorry I tried to read their "Who Are We" but the comma situation distressed me too much and I wondered why I cared and I'm terrible with grammar

SabrinaThwaite · 27/06/2020 17:20

I think Cummings has been reading all the work that's been done in the last few years about how attractive LEO satellite networks are becoming for providing global navigation satellite systems.

DGRossetti · 27/06/2020 17:26

So who would play Cummings in a biopic ? Piers Gaveston or Hugh Despenser ?

Clavinova · 27/06/2020 17:34

"the Paris-based satellite operator Eutelsat, which apparently has the backing of the French government and several other European Union member states" ??

“Ownership of the OneWeb system (either as-designed or as-modified) could confer a significant economic, strategic, and geopolitical advantage to its owner/operator." ??

DGRossetti · 27/06/2020 17:36

Coming to a UK near you soon (as predicted) ?

www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/jun/27/obamacare-trump-covid-health-insurance

C-19 survivors will be denied health insurance if Trump gets his way.

If reflected in the UK that's a whole wedge of folks that are going to suddenly find their private healthcare useless with a corresponding increased demand on the NHS.

Given how the UK government pretty much did what travel insurers wanted, I wouldn't be hopeful they'll rein in health insurers.

Does really continue to beg the question what's the point of insurance ?

Clavinova · 27/06/2020 17:40

Sorry I tried to read their "Who Are We" but the comma situation distressed me too much and I wondered why I cared.

Oxford comma?

ListeningQuietly · 27/06/2020 17:45

What do we think of Kate Green as the new Shadow Education secretary ?

DGRossetti · 27/06/2020 17:50

@SabrinaThwaite

I think Cummings has been reading all the work that's been done in the last few years about how attractive LEO satellite networks are becoming for providing global navigation satellite systems.
Of course ! I should have realised !!!!!

I was completely blindsided by the almost congenital inability of the UK to ever leverage its own research. Especially in matters of space.

We are - in a Boris "world beating" sense, the only county that has developed an orbital capability and then cancelled it.

But apart from that, we deserve to rule the spacewaves clearly.

SabrinaThwaite · 27/06/2020 17:52

Not UK research generally.

But keep going, you'll get there eventually.

yoikes · 27/06/2020 17:56

Can anyone be worse than RLB?

ListeningQuietly · 27/06/2020 17:58

yoikes
I'd not really heard of her before but the CV here
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kate_Green
looks hopeful
she has a long history of working on poverty and inequality

Peregrina · 27/06/2020 18:17

She looks good potentially.

Clavinova · 27/06/2020 18:19

Facebook July 2019 -

"Kate Green MP hosted an historic event on 12 June in Parliament organised by Cllr Steven Longden about why we should phase out private schools."

"That meeting led to Labour Against Private Schools being set up."

"We are delighted to have Kate as an official LAPS supporter."

yoikes · 27/06/2020 18:24

She sounds good

Clavinova · 27/06/2020 18:43

Yes, why not dismantle one of the success stories of the pandemic - outstanding online teaching from many private schools near me.

Has it been available to all children inequality or just those with rich parents Grin

yoikes · 27/06/2020 18:48

Success story for whom, exactly?

yoikes · 27/06/2020 18:49

The huge inequality in this country will be as large as in the US in another generation.
