Westminstenders: Silly Season

It's that time of year again when politicians seem to completely lose their marbles in order to impress the faithful. And it is beginning to feel like conference season is increasingly an exercise in religious ferver to the party rather than considering what's in the best interests of the whole country.

Labour have got off to a good start before their conference opens, by almost starting complete melt down.

The Tories have promised to break from convention and try and over shadow the others, so that's something to look forward to.

And early this week we have the supreme Court ruling which could, regardless of which direction it swings, have massive ramifications for our democracy.

Big week ahead.

No one is above the law.

It's long been the law the government is subject to scrutiny by parliament elected by the people and it can't do that if its prorogued.

GrouchyKiwi · 24/09/2019 10:57

I didn't expect a unanimous judgement. That's very damning for the government.

Bloody big day.

Cackleweb · 24/09/2019 10:57

Forget Judge Dredd, we've got Lady Hale.

'I am the law!'

BigChocFrenzy · 24/09/2019 10:58

"What is the consequence for HIM personally? For the ones who supported him?"

I expect .... Sweet FA

His govt does not respect the law; neither do its supporters
He may still prorogue again in October, block an extension, run out the time

Expect full-on "Enemies of the People" from the rightwing media, egged on from behind the scenes by Cummings
So, that "No 10 spokesman" giving out official obscenities again

TheElementsSong · 24/09/2019 10:58

Have we had any "Saboteurs" "Enemies of the People" and "Metropolitan Liberal Elites" yet?

NoWordForFluffy · 24/09/2019 10:58

I love Lady Hale too!

Jeremy Corbyn on floor of conference now as he cancels his own conference speech

He confusingly demands that Parliament is 'recalled immediately'

In fact it doesn't need to be recalled as the Supreme Court has ruled that prorogation is 'void' it effectively never happened

I didn't expect a unanimous judgment either. But in a way it's a common sense ruling: the PM is answerable to parliament and you can't just get rid of parliament when you don't like what they are doing.

DH said the answer was a GE and MPs rejected that, so he thought the ruling would go the other way. I'll enjoy seeing the Torygraph and Heil tying themselves up in angry knots.

Halfeatentoast · 24/09/2019 10:59

Rocking that spider brooch.

BigChocFrenzy · 24/09/2019 10:59

Unanimous decsions were a very welcome surprise

The Supremes standing shoulder to shoulder, not intimidated by unsubtle statements from No 10

I've had several MPs (including Tory MPs!) over the last couple of weeks tell me that Boris Johnson will have to resign if he is found to have acted unlawfully and lied to the Queen.

This is truly devastating for the PM - his response will be critical.

Dominic Grieve, asked whether Johnson won't simply try a second prorogation, says he expects it would be immediately struck down by courts now

The #SupremeCourtuk has made a terrible decision. Our democratic system is failing and yet they think an unelected court may interfere in government business.

If BJ were to resign,
then we would know that the penny has finally dropped and he realises there will be no cake deal

i.e. he would just be running away from a Brexit disaster, but using the Supremes' ruling as an excuse

Looks like we're all gonna be walking out before Tom Watson's speech, including Tom Watson, and heading back to Westminster...

Labour have just said they won't vote to campaign for Remain.
The Electorate are saying they will change who they vote for in heartlands.
Not one can agree on anything, so which miracle are you hoping for , that is going to unite everyone?

DGRossetti · 24/09/2019 11:03

So every time the Queen meets Boris now, it's in the clear and public knowledge that he lied to her ?

I can't see that being sustainable - nor the palace being happy with it.
