Westminstenders: Silly Season

It's that time of year again when politicians seem to completely lose their marbles in order to impress the faithful. And it is beginning to feel like conference season is increasingly an exercise in religious ferver to the party rather than considering what's in the best interests of the whole country.

Labour have got off to a good start before their conference opens, by almost starting complete melt down.

The Tories have promised to break from convention and try and over shadow the others, so that's something to look forward to.

And early this week we have the supreme Court ruling which could, regardless of which direction it swings, have massive ramifications for our democracy.

Big week ahead.

Great idea Granny. America can keep their criminals.

lonelyplanetmum · 24/09/2019 11:29

Who will be the fall guy Cummings, JRM ?

berlinbabylon · 24/09/2019 11:31

Hopefully both of them.

Peregrina · 24/09/2019 11:40

Will Rees-Mogg be collateral damage? I hope so.

MockersthefeMANist · 24/09/2019 11:43

Deputy Heads will roll?

That would be very BJ, to lay down his friends for his life.

Emilyontmoor · 24/09/2019 11:49

I suspect this is in Cummings playbook - all playing to their people versus the elites strategy. I predict something consistent with that coming out of —Cummings— No 10. The frothy mouthed hard Brexiteers will be mobilised by it but surely they underestimate how this will play with traditional Tory voters in the shires ? Surely not well....

FoldyRoll · 24/09/2019 11:54

That would be true if it was 6:5 Emily but a unanimous verdict could not have been predicted. It's a total slap down. Yes they'll try to spin it but regardless of Brexit or political leanings, the current administration looks like a total shit show. Even Fartage and Tice are calling for Cummings and Johnson to go. Still offering an electoral pact of course, but will the heedbangers in the ERG have anyone sufficiently hardline and credible enough to offer?

DGRossetti · 24/09/2019 11:59

a unanimous verdict could not have been predicted.

The fact it was telegraphed so early on was a clear signal that something momentous was happening. With no dissension, the government simply haven't any wriggle room at all. It would be fascinating to know the discussions that went into the judgement, but I am guessing even the less convinced Justices realised the impact of a unanimous verdict. Especially since the judiciary has been under sustained attack these past 3 years with no support from our elected representatives.

It's really not fun to live in a country with no laws.

Hah!

HMQ presumably throwing darts quite energetically at a picture of Boris in One's drawing room...

I agree.
Stop Brexit !!!!

thecatfromjapan · 24/09/2019 12:56

I think Johnson and co. Seriously underestimated how this would go.

For a start, it's hard to convey how ordinary and diverse the crowds outside the Supreme Court are. If you walked into the supermarkets (all of them) of the UK and scooped a few people up randomly, you'd have the outside crowd.

I think it's played very badly.

The Brexit frothers are there, too. But they are a tiny bunch.

I don't think Cummings is a super-intelligent shade of blue. But I guess now, we will see what sort of tactician he is.

Tragically, for us, the Leader of the Opposition is crap.

I think Corbyn is hopeless enough to call for a GE. 🤷‍♀️

ARoomWithoutADoor · 24/09/2019 22:42

God Bless the Supreme Court.

they called it right on the Named Person legislation.

And they called it super-right and very publicly on this.

I am not ashamed to say I cried.
