Westminstenders: Silly Season

It's that time of year again when politicians seem to completely lose their marbles in order to impress the faithful. And it is beginning to feel like conference season is increasingly an exercise in religious ferver to the party rather than considering what's in the best interests of the whole country.

Labour have got off to a good start before their conference opens, by almost starting complete melt down.

The Tories have promised to break from convention and try and over shadow the others, so that's something to look forward to.

And early this week we have the supreme Court ruling which could, regardless of which direction it swings, have massive ramifications for our democracy.

Big week ahead.

What are the odds of Lord Carnwath dissenting. He likes to plough his own furrow!

I agree with Lark
Justiciable
Unlawful

I think a prime minister can’t be seen to have unfettered power to dismiss parliament with no challenge possible.

Sebastian Payne @SebastianEPayne
NCA declines to confirm or deny reports it is investigating @Arron_banks on other matters “related to business dealings overseas”

Will Boris resign do you think? Or just have a massive sulk?

Cracklycaramel · 24/09/2019 10:25

I went to the Ivan Rogers talk this morning- absolutely fascinating and full of the areas Westminstenders has been talking about over the last 3 years. Have taken detailed notes so I can report back if I can read my handwriting but the main headline for me was his assessment that no deal was the most likely outcome.

Massive sulk.

Peregrina · 24/09/2019 10:27

That the premature death of John Smith was something of a tragedy seems to be one of the few things that Leavers here and Remainers agree upon.

We desperately need someone else of his stature, who could find a way to reconcile the two sides.

3 minutes to go until the key decision - I daren't watch. I hope that Johnson gets a bollocking if nothing else.

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 24/09/2019 10:28

@TokyoSushi that's what I think too although I think there'll be a lot of pressure for him to resign.

FoldyRoll · 24/09/2019 10:28

Before we kick off, it's worth noting that there was a fair bit of movement on the Brexit odds at the betting exchanges last night. May mean nothing, but lots of money going on to outcomes Westminstenders would think favourable and odds on the opposite falling to pieces. The most interesting movement is on the likelihood of Johnson resigning. Someone knows something.

DGRossetti · 24/09/2019 10:29

Be curious to see how quick the government response to any unwelcome judgement is ... (i.e. are they really going to consider it carefully, or have they already decided what they are going to do regardless ...)

RedToothBrush · 24/09/2019 10:30

Here come the judges...

Hmmm, when I went to bed on 23 June 2016 all the betting was going on remain. Nobody knew much about that, as it turned out when I woke up to the BBC saying it was predicting a leave vote.
