The troops were getting on fine with the Catholics in West Belfast but the problem was the failure to impose direct rule. The Unionist govt at Stormont supplied very dodgy intel about which houses to raid and who to pick up. Maybe their records were just out of date. Or maybe they were using the army to put the Paddies back in their place. Either way, the animosity soon grew and became a cycle of violence.

Police also won't be too worried about killing anyone -after all they're legally incapable of murder, by convention.

Only today on Twitter I saw that the man who killed John Pat Cunningham by shooting him in the back has a following saying he should be left alone and not have to face trial. He was following orders and it was just a Paddy. How are people still so ignorant and using the Nazi defence for what happened in NI.
