Well this seems well thought out, what could possibly go wrong. Idiots.

Fractal, because there are some of the same tensions between Catholic and Protestant communities in the west of Scotland, (and NW England), although not to the same extent, so these are not the best Police forces to send.

But what really annoyed me, because I grew up in Wales, was the conflating of Great Britain with England without apparently being aware of what they were saying. It helps to explain why Westminster ignores Scotland, Wales and NI - because most of them hardly realise they exist!

woman19 · 25/08/2019 10:08

Worth looking more closely at why Scottish soldiers were sent in during the last Irish War folks.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 25/08/2019 10:14

CALM DOWN

You seem to be the only one yelling

Maybe you should take some of your own advice

MockersthefeMANist · 25/08/2019 11:55

You might also like to Google "Black & Tans," English police sent to Ireland. That went well.

The ungratefull Irish will insist on remembering all this stuff.

FractalChaos · 25/08/2019 19:31

Thank you all. APologies for my ignorance- although always willing to learn! I will look up all the suggestions.

The coast guard?

Sorry bad Simpsons joke during a serious conversation...

Fucking horrifying. And at the same time, according to the Yellowhammer document, the army will be called in to keep citizens on the mainland in line if necessary.

I really and truly never thought I would see the day.

Peregrina · 25/08/2019 21:42

Did Leavers really vote to have martial law?

woman19 · 25/08/2019 23:48

Did Leavers really vote to have martial law
It's what they 'live' for.

TheSandman · 26/08/2019 00:05

I live 3 miles from the border. The locals here grew up with bombs and guns and violence as the norm. You knew which locals were involved in certain organisations, or that your neighbour had a stash of guns hidden. You kept your mouth shut.

I don't want my children growing up in that.

Nobody wants your kids to grown up with that. I'm old enough to remember the Troubles. Though I have never lived in Ireland, my ex GF was from a Belfast Catholic family and they had horror stories. One of my arguments with Leavers, Pre Brexit referendum, was that as soon as you put any kind of Border up between NI and The Republic you've torn up up the Good Friday Agreement and the killing will start all over again. I was told I was doom-mongering.

Nobody wants anyone's kids growing up in that - but there are idiot people who think it would be a price worth paying for their Holy Grail Brexit.

Troubles in NI were on the UK news regularly at the time of happening. Since troubles stopped in 1998 (some might say reduced as opposed to stopped) there has been little coverage in media or press. Those that have not lived in NI, or have family connections, will likely have forgotten all about it by now.

As NI is not in UK mainland the Westminster crowd may likely view it as elsewhere and not important? Scotland, Wales and the less well off parts of England are ignored and left out too.

If a border does go up between NI and ROI whoever is prepared to police it should be paid a fortune to cover the risk. Employers should provide large insurance coverage so that any dependents are looked after if the event of anything happens that prevents them from working in the future.

I always understood that Maggie Thatcher only got interested in talking to the IRA when they started bombing the City of London, and it was going to make the buildings uninsurable, thus crippling the Finance Industry.

Bombing and killing innocents in places like Warrington, well "Where's that? Oh oop North somewhere." Still the attitude of too many Tory MPs.

MysteryTripAgain · 26/08/2019 08:33

Employers can provide insurance from their own funds. As Police are public sector, government should provide.

Peregrina · 26/08/2019 08:54

This money that we are not going to pay to the EU is going to have to go round an awful lot of places!

It reminds me of some friends who spent an expected tax rebate 5 times over and then got half of what they were banking on. Not a good position to be in.

MysteryTripAgain · 26/08/2019 09:17

Governments are good at spending the same money more than once!

Hopefully HS2 is scrapped as that frees up a lot.

Peregrina · 26/08/2019 09:21

Boris Johnson is certainly good at wasting public money. Also good at making empty promises.

Pretty much it. Innocent people are just headline fodder. But profits ... well now. The only reason it took the IRA so long is that they really could not believe the English would put up with such violence and such intransigence from their own government.

I must admit, I can see why some might be excited at the thought of the IRA returning, in this age of revivals. After Al queda and Isis, it will be good to see some decent British bombing again. Say what you will, I find ISIS rude.

RuggerHug · 26/08/2019 18:31

That was always Thatchers attitude to the Irish, remember how she acted with the hunger strikers?

@mrstooth
So I wrote this quickly and from the gut, about our summer of discontent in the north, and try to weigh up whether things are spiralling out of control.

TL;DR: No and yes, and maybe in a different way than we think.

Interesting article. Things are complicated. Peace is popular. Smile

whyamidoingthis · 26/08/2019 20:04

@yolofish - the army will be called in to keep citizens on the mainland in line if necessary.

Let's hope they don't do the same quality job they did in NI.

whyamidoingthis · 26/08/2019 20:19

@chomalungma - Back in the 1960s, the British Army was sent in to NI to help protect the police there.

The nationalists originally welcomed the army as they believed they would protect them from the RUC, B specials etc. They served them tea and cakes when they arrived and welcomed them into their homes.

That didn't last. You had the Ballymurphy Massacre in 1971, Bloody Sunday in 1972 etc.

RuggerHug · 26/08/2019 22:54

Anyone who doesn't know what @whyamidoingthis said. All4 app, all the channel 4 shows, it's free, download it. Type it massacre and see what happened.

Appalling - and few of us (in England) had heard of the Ballymurphy Massacre. I do remember the outrage at the time of Bloody Sunday.
