Brexit

Genuine question to Leave voters - what did you expect to happen when you voted Leave?

I voted Remain and I really want to know what Leavers expect to achieve from their vote. Not being sarky. I read/hear so much about "that's what people voted for/that's not what people voted for". Please tell me what you expect to happen now.

Farage has not earned his pension. He was from the start contemptuous of the EU Parliament. As our UK representative on the Fisheries committee, he attended only one meeting out of a possible 42.

The man is a charlaton and should be stripped of his EU pension.

I completely agree, but he and his cronies have done nothing but whinge now that they've realised they've done themselves out of some dosh. (Which is quite incredible when you consider how much Farage made with hedge funds on election night with his false "concession.")

If I had been a leave voter, I think by now I might have realised that I had made a serious mistake, but then I am someone who looks at the evidence, listens to experts and is impressed by facts , not silly simplistic slogans and fake news, so perhaps that is why I was not a leave voter.

Google archive searches.

Jobs would become more secure, Britain would become more socialist, govt would get hurt, there would be less discrimination against non-EU foreigners, govt would listen more to people, get more manufacturing & jobs, ensure breakup of EU, get out of EU before it collapses.

expected.... to create a united Ireland, to live in a more democratic country...

wanted.... less bureaucracy, more buying British, points based immigration system, more democracy.

(better paid) jobs for self & kids.

hoped for bring the entire EU down

Reasons why the Sun said we should vote for Brexit: cheaper food, deport foreign criminals, more democracy, to stop paying money to EU, "workers to triumph over the bosses", to bring down the EU, to destroy the reputation of past PMs, to make Scotland leave UK, to force Cameron & Osborne out of office.

Certainly achieved that last one. Who says dreams can't come true? :(

Some leave voters I know who are farmers said in spring 2016 that they expected to get more money for their exports, and for subsidies to become more sensible. They felt that people were paid just to leave land idle but still not do much for nature.

Another (town dweller self employed in service occupation, Express reader) thought it would be the best way to cut immigration. She and her husband also owned a holiday let in an EU country but they didn't feel Brexit would make anything more difficult there, and they intended to keep the place.

Amazing that some people actually believe scrapping the Human Rights Act is a good thing!!!

SoloD · 22/07/2018 11:23

More money for their Exports? How????

There is a possibility of more sensible farming subsidies, in that we will be a much poorer country and won't be able to afford them and farmers will see their subsidies cut.

pennycarbonara · 22/07/2018 11:25

I did say it was about what people were saying in 2016 before the vote, not now.

SoloD · 22/07/2018 11:29

Not having a go, I was curious about the logic. The price is set by supply and demand. I can't see why people would think Brexit would be a factor.

caroldecker · 22/07/2018 11:40

SoloD
If you believe the price of agricultural goods is set by supply and demand anywhere in the world you are deluded. All major economies manipulate food prices through subsidies, tariffs and non-tariff barriers.
