I’m going to keep this one very simple.

THE DEADLINE TO REGISTER TO VOTE IS 22ND MAY.
www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

Postal votes start to go out on 23rd May.

Your challenge is to persuade someone to register to vote or to get someone who is considering not to, to get their arse to the polling station.

Go forth and harass. Especially women and the young.

That’s it. No frills OP.

When President Trump’s bodyguard revealed Jim Mattis’s private cellphone number

We got a call Friday from a reader named Paul Redmond that The Post had accidentally published Defense Secretary Jim Mattis’s private cell phone number.

A story about President Trump’s bodyguard Keith Schiller, Redmond said, was accompanied by a photograph of the two of them walking on White House grounds. The bodyguard was holding a stack of papers, and, according to the caller, on the outside of those papers was a yellow sticky note that said “Jim, Mad Dog, Mattis” and had a phone number

This of course sounds impossible. Way more care than that is taken around the president, right? The Secret Service is good at secrecy, generally. So I thanked the guy for the call and dubiously pulled up the photo in question. With the monitor turned 90 degrees and the photo blown up, indeed, I could make out a number and what might be “Jim, Mad Dog, Mattis,” if you have better eyesight than mine even when I squint.

I called. I got the voice mail. It was him.

Suddenly NHS IT problems look positively sophicasted fuck up.

WH comms staffers just put the TVs on super loud after we could hear yelling coming from room w/ Bannon, Spicer, Sanders

This is a reporter at the WH reporting what's going on there this evening. Not someone reporting that a source told him.

It'll make a great movie one day. Though I'll have to be a trilogy.

“The fact that different ethnic groups are being paid less for doing the same jobs is an injustice which cannot be allowed in 21st-century Britain”

Her motive is to show that 'ethnics' drag down wages.

PattyPenguin · 16/05/2017 07:27

Focused on the NHS in the UK

NancyWake it wasn't "focussed" on anything except computer systems with security vulnerabilities.

The media in the UK understandably focussed on the impact on the NHS.

In fact the attack hit over 10,000 organisations and 200,000 individuals in over 150 countries, and by far the worst affected country was Russia.

Kaija · 16/05/2017 07:34

Quite depressing vox pop on Today just now, asking people which manifesto policies belonged to which party. All thought the "year's unpaid leave to look after sick relatives" was Labour. One asked how it was going to be paid for. They just didn't hear the word "unpaid", as I'm sure was noted in focus groups before the policy was announced. Clever, nasty stuff this.

RebelAllianceUK · 16/05/2017 08:01

Clever, nasty stuff this

Well yes, but no. "Unpaid" means "unpaid",
after all Grin

But every time I read something like this it takes me back to an old Doctor Who episode where the vast majority of the population were brainwashed by the Master, through subliminal messaging via the media, into giving him absolute power as Prime Minister. He then proceeded to remove their rights until they were living in poverty and fear. "End of Time" was the episode title, I think Smile

RebelAllianceUK · 16/05/2017 08:18

"The Sound of Drums" was the episode. Excuse me.

It seems that every now and then, certain societies develop a collective madness, which is what we are seeing now. As did Germany in the 1920s and 30s - who were a cultured, educated nation. Sorry, (not) I know mentions of Nazi Germany get Leavers rattled.

Bearbehind · 16/05/2017 08:44

Since Germany appear to be making it clear that we are on our own what do people realistically think will happen with German car imports to the U.K.?

I know so many Leavers who quoted this as the reason we'd always be fine i.e., the Germans would never agree to restrictions on us buying their cars, because they need us more than we need them, yadda, yadda.

We will lose all our car plants due to Brexit and wider economic issues. So realistically we will pay more for cars. Seeing as there is not British car manufacturer in practice

Peregrina · 16/05/2017 08:50

German cars - the high end cars will still sell, and indeed for the wealthy, still being able to afford a German car will enhance their status, among their wealthy chums, at least.

Lower down the chain? I think fewer will be imported/or made here. Unless Treeza manages to give all the car firms a bung to stay here, then I think they will gradually run down production of old models and new ones will be made elsewhere.

BTW did anyone find out a) which car John Redwood drives, and b) which of the lower priced range of family cars are wholly made in Britain?

missmoon · 16/05/2017 08:50

Red not great news, but Dutch coalition talks are forever collapsing. They will try again (I lived in the NL for 7 years).

Looks like, Peregrina

Sky is collecting evidence for future reference, I hope. Smile

As digital advertising is tailored to individual neurosis, and as Banks pointed out, this worked so well in his coup.

Sky is asking people to take screen shots of FB adverts, particularly from the Britain first/torykip party and send them to this address.

news.sky.com/story/invisible-election-how-political-parties-target-you-for-your-vote-10878316

It is now an inescapable part of our elections - but it is in the dark, with implications for our democracy.

And Sky News' Invisible Election campaign needs your help to bring it into the light. Are you in receipt of targeted adverts on Facebook from political parties? Please screenshot them and email to [email protected], or tweet us screenshots to @skynews with hashtag #InvisibleElection

Kaija · 16/05/2017 08:54

Bear, I met a leaver at the weekend who was certain that negotiations would be driven by the desires of German car manufacturers, meaning a good deal for the UK. Oddly his job was selling German cars, and he said they are already suffering, but that it would all be worth it in the end for the sake of not being told what to do by Brussels.

Easier to fool a man than convince him that he's been fooled etc.

RedToothBrush · 16/05/2017 09:02

Kaija I don't know whether to laugh or cry manically to that. It doesn't, however, surprise me in the slightest.

Anger will eventually come out of that situation. And in order to save face probably won't be directed at the people it should be.

That's what upsets me most. This won't just lead to poverty but a wholly dangerous situation.

Treeza visited our constituency last week. Local paper was scathing about, as she appeared in community centre the Tory mayor tried to close down. Anyway, I could not work out who the local Tory candidate was in this safest of Labour seats. With 3 weeks to go his name is TBC. The Tories do not waste their money.

From the local paper:
Voting survey reveals the Conservatives could take safe Labour seat in the North East

Our exclusive figures reveal formerly safe seats in the region are under threat and could turn blue in the General Election

The North East still intends to vote Labour in the upcoming General Election but an exclusive survey for ChronicleLive shows that the Tories lead in the North West Durham constituency - which has been held by Labour since it was created in 1950.

As it stands, 23.7% of those surveyed in the area said they would vote Labour, while 26.9% responded they intended to choose the Conservatives.

Our data, which had more than 6,000 respondents, showed that Sunderland Central, another safe Labour seat, could also turn blue.
www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/voting-poll-reveals-conservatives-could-13032196

In the original version of the article it said Newcastle East and West are too close to call.

Tynemouth is a target seat for the Tories, so they are pouring money in it.

Lucky there are no laws on election expenses now, that ruling came just in time. Hmm

Bearbehind · 16/05/2017 09:17

kaija, sadly it seems our desire for German cars and their desire to sell them to us has been the lifeline for an awful lot of people doesn't it? Hmm

Kaija · 16/05/2017 09:17

It's our equivalent of "but her emails"

squishysquirmy · 16/05/2017 09:19

Its a very difficult thing for people to admit (even to themselves) that they were wrong, that their strongly held belief was based on little evidence, and that they could have seen this for themselves at the time, if only they had bothered to look a little deeper.

Far, far easier to blame traitors and foreigners.

RedToothBrush · 16/05/2017 09:19

Ford is making plans to cut about 10% of its global staff, which could mean about 20,000 jobs worldwide, report says

With the BMW factory working to a Just In Time system, I don't see how it can keep going once customs controls are introduced. Building warehouses for parts could cushion some of the delays.

Ah but David Davis says that we are going to negotiate a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement, doesn't he? Considering in 10 and a half months they have done little, at that time scale, I would put it at 10 years before we have one.
