I’m going to keep this one very simple.

THE DEADLINE TO REGISTER TO VOTE IS 22ND MAY.
www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

Postal votes start to go out on 23rd May.

Your challenge is to persuade someone to register to vote or to get someone who is considering not to, to get their arse to the polling station.

Go forth and harass. Especially women and the young.

That’s it. No frills OP.

So, do we believe her motives are pure Hmm?

woman I've only ever read of Brits referring to Inselaffen / "island apes" - never a German.
I once asked a German colleague, who'd never heard the term.

MrsSummerisle · 15/05/2017 21:32

woman12345

I don't know the answer to your question but I learnt a new word for the British: "Inselaffen" Grin

So "Island Apes" is an amusing and acceptable term for the British, is it? Not racist or xenophobic? How interesting.

LurkingHusband · 15/05/2017 21:40

So you're saying those kinds of slurs are amusing and acceptable depending on who's using them, or on whom? Wow, you learn new things every day.

LurkingHusband · 15/05/2017 21:50

No, I wasn't actually saying that. But I am saying I have little sympathy for anyone offended by a purported crass German slang word for the British, when the British have proved themselves past masters of the offensive - and justified it with "it's just a laugh".

"Two world wars and one world cup" etc ...

MrsSummerisle · 15/05/2017 22:04

But I am saying I have little sympathy for anyone offended by a purported crass German slang word for the British, when the British have proved themselves past masters of the offensive - and justified it with "it's just a laugh".

No problem with that at all - I think we should all be allowed to give as much offence as we like. But somehow I don't think that "look at this funny slur I learned about a whole nation - Island Apes! Grin" would be tolerated on here if it referred to anyone other than the British.

BigChocFrenzy · 15/05/2017 22:07

And I am living in Germany - I've worked here many times since the late 89s - and I never heard of the term, nor has the German colleague I asked
It's certainly obscure and little used

BigChocFrenzy · 15/05/2017 22:08

I've often heard the terms "hun", "frog" and "wop" in the UK though

Ashcroft GE poll - Which voters have / not moved on since Brexit Ref

Nearly half of Remainers have accepted the ref result and just want to get on with it
BUT

Scotland, London and the young are much more likely to want to resist.
Sounds more like it is the older and the English Remainers who have given up.

"Q.43 Which of the following statements comes closest to your view even if you don’t agree with any of them entirely?

  • I voted for Britain to leave the EU at the referendum and I now want Brexit to happen as soon as possible 48%
  • I voted for Britain to remain in the EU at the referendum, but the result to leave the EU must be honoured and we need to get on with it 25%
  • I voted for Britain to remain in the EU at the referendum and would still like to prevent Brexit from happening if at all possible 29%"

BUT this wish to prevent Brexit rises to
43% in Scotland
39% in London

and for young voters across the UK:
18-24’s – 44% still want to overturn it
25-34 – 38% still want to overturn it

BigChocFrenzy · 15/05/2017 22:21

imo, being more critical of British slang words is the equivalent of being particular of your own DCs manners, rather than criticising the manners of someone else's DC.

BigChocFrenzy · 15/05/2017 22:24

I remembered seeing this - another way the young are being hammered:
Earnings premium for graduates has become a myth

Young people taking on debt to get a degree are being conned if they are doing so to boost their future earnings

http://www.cityam.com/246526/youre-probably-not-earning-graduate-premium-you-were-told

“Any politician or policy-maker who dangles the carrot of an average lifetime earnings premium should be challenged for gross mis-selling," said co-founder of the Intergenerational Foundation think tank Angus Hanton.

"Our research proves that the current £100,000 graduate earnings premium so often touted equates to an 'annual bonus' of just £2,222 over 45 years of work, and is wiped out once National Insurance and Income Tax are taken into account.

"Furthermore, the premium is simply not enough to cover the interest accruing on the average loan.

The current system is fuelling a self-perpetuating debt-generating machine which short-changes young people."

Positive Brexit news to rejoice in! (Shame I'm not really enjoying this new season of Versailles).

www.theguardian.com/media/2017/may/15/french-tv-company-behind-versailles-to-invest-in-uk-drama

The French maker of the lavish TV period drama Versailles is launching a €50m (£42.4m) fund to make English-language dramas with UK production companies, in a move influenced by the weakening of the pound since the Brexit vote.

Trump revealed highly classified information to Russian foreign minister and ambassador

John Schindler‏*@20committee*
We're beyond mere unfitness for office with this one.

This is treasonous.

From a former US IC person

Except. He is above the law:
For almost anyone in government, discussing such matters with an adversary would be illegal. As president, Trump has broad authority to declassify government secrets, making it unlikely that his disclosures broke the law.

Jasmin Mujanović‏*@JasminMuj*
Once again, for those in the back: Trump is himself the greatest national security threat to the US. Astounding.
Says article, Trump: "revealed more information to the Russian ambassador than we have shared with our own allies." Allies will love that.
Unsurprisingly, NATO already trying to detach self (as much as possible) from Trump. US now a security threat to EU.
foreignpolicy.com/2017/05/15/nato-frantically-tries-to-trump-proof-presidents-first-visit-alliance-europe-brussels/
This is (yet another) one of those "a republic, if you can keep it" moments. US institutions yet to respond in meaningful fashion.
US allies, meanwhile, already going their own way. Merkel - Macron meeting today a reset of core Franco-German pact, key to EU stability.
I suspect Congress still ignorant, in denial of how all this playing in Europe esp. These burnt bridges won't be easily repaired.
From security angle, EUs incredibly conservative, hesitant (see YUG, Iraq). But when they act, it's definitive - see UK post-Brexit.
Germany, France, other key EU states already pivoted away from US, will increase distance, lessen co-op w US; NATO now de facto EU alliance.
All of which is to say simply: this is Trump's "America First" in practice. America alone, w/o allies, utterly compromised by Kremlin.
And just wait until intel/data sharing really dries up. When US intel orgs left blind in increasingly unstable, chaotic world.
Just wait until real body count of this admin's ignorance, collusion w Putin regime becomes apparent. Long, long, hard fall to come.
As @juliaioffe says: "Good night. Tomorrow will be worse." I would only add: worse than most are even willing to imagine. /x

Well that sounds.... errrr.... gulp

What was all that shit about an EU army if we stayed in the EU? And where the heck does this leave the UK?

About that trident renewal? When is it the UK are nuking the EU on the US's behalf on the orders of Russia?

Am I too cynical in wondering whether N.Korea would actually give a fuck about targetting the NHS and whether this was a homegrown wheeze to justify more draconion internet security measures?

Is that overly paranoid? It's hard to tell these days.

NancyWake · 15/05/2017 23:19

If it had been Russia or 'Isis' I could kind of see the point, but N.Korea, really?

RedToothBrush · 15/05/2017 23:19

The Associated Press‏*@AP*
BREAKING: Merkel says Germany prepared in principle to discuss EU treaty changes if necessary.

What does this mean in real money? as my Grandmother used to say ?

It means that in order for the EU to survive, France and Germany are going to reform the EU. Probably in the way in which we would have liked. But that's not important since we are no longer a member. Instead France and Germany are going to work together a lot more closely with the UK completely excluded. No close relationship possible.

Germany now also seem to be making it clear that the UK is completely cut off and we will have to foot the bill.

In other words, we are so stuffed its true. We have no allies. Trump isn't an ally.

This doesn't surprise me, and the problem with Trump is that one can't be entirely sure that everything that comes out is intentional.

If that's the bollocks that's being spouted, then yes. Its a cover for their own incompetence. Everyone who has been within 50 ft of the NHS IT system could tell you how full of holes its security is. It was an accident waiting to happen.

It wasn't an 'attack on the NHS' - it was a global opportunistic cyberattack.

Apparently the source looks to be North Korea, which is not beyond the realms of probability really - weren't they behind the Sony hack?

I notice Corbyn was getting political mileage out of it too - although apparently the trusts were all sent the details for the patch & warned a while back - some trusts did it, some didn't bother.

NancyWake · 15/05/2017 23:57

It's global though isn't it, not just the NHS.

N.Korea is the latest line, but I don't believe it. The Telegraph was indicating a cyber gang called 'shadow brokers' with some link to Russia.

NancyWake · 15/05/2017 23:58

That was to RTB^

NancyWake · 15/05/2017 23:59

Focused on the NHS on the UK.

NancyWake · 16/05/2017 00:01

weren't they behind the Sony hack

I thought that highly unlikely, more likely to be industrial espionage and dirty tricks I'd say...
