actually on country file this morning i was worried about biodiversity, or something like that, Confused
bugs and other creatures coming in through the plants we import from the EU. if we are out of the EU the bugs will come from China or somewhere Shock and could be far worse.

NoahVale · 17/07/2016 16:51

oh and the housing estate round the corner from us has gone bust in the middle of construction,
blames brexit

lasermum · 17/07/2016 17:15

DH has just been told that he is at risk from redundancy - his Dublin based company want his role to be based in Dublin and no more remote working in the UK (which he has done very effectively for 8 years).

This is very bad news for us as I am sure it will go through.

LoloKazoloh · 17/07/2016 18:36

Oh dear! /me reads thread more closely

Well, I tend to have a laugh in dark times myself. But shall restrain self on MN for now as this has gone a bit wrong, oh dear.

Lizzylou · 17/07/2016 18:45

Lolo, I laughed!

The whole thing is fucking laughable to be fair, just waiting for Trump to get in and complete the whole shebang.

Maybe they had an arrangement wherein there was a 3 month lead in time for EU brickies and labourers- who decided to look elsewhere?

Pahahaha. You know sod all about construction. Lead time for construction staff is about a day. The idea a shortage of construction staff would derail a project is laughable.

grannyinwaiting · 18/07/2016 20:20

Yes. The ARM takeover is local to me and I immediately saw the bloody spin on it 😕

NoahVale · 18/07/2016 20:50

yes i noticed that on the news about ARM, one optimistic person and one very sad.
It is all in the spin.

I keep having to say I am sorry, to Polish friends, to my Australian friends, to my friends and contacts overseas.

The Polish friends are upset and feel betrayed and vulnerable. There have been tears here too.

The Australian friends pulled out of the house purchase in our road. He works in overseas development, it does not look as if post Brexit the UK will be looking outwards. They now plan to work out their contract and return to Australia, their children have never lived there but they feel this country just became a less tolerant place to bring them up.

Overseas they thought we were idiots, an irrational referendum decision, the only explanation that we were acting out of illusions of entitlement resulting from our colonial past, and then we made Boris Foriegn secretary - that was when they really started to laugh. Light hearted enough for you? It's the only aspect of this that I can see is a complete joke.

Sorry also to the people above already suffering the economic effects.

whatwouldrondo · 19/07/2016 13:10

And the overseas friends who think we are a complete joke are not in the main in the EU, they are in all the countries the Brexiteers plan to trade with in the bright new post Brexit world, not a good start......

BillSykesDog · 19/07/2016 13:13

Don't come out with such nonsense then Draylon if you don't want to be called out on it. You must know you have no knowledge to make such claims. 3 month lead time to recruit labourers indeed. That truly is hilarious.

whatwouldrondo · 19/07/2016 13:22

And I forgot that the people who I am really saying sorry to are my daughter's who will have to make their lives in the face of this mess and for one of them that will almost certainly now have to be overseas because she is a Scientist. It used to seem like such a good thing, that she was choosing a career not for the money but because she wanted to make a difference, and had worked so hard to get there but now people apparently want all the evil experts shipped overseas and don't care that we will lose the advantage that comes from having been one of the most pre eminent nations in STEM research with access to all the technology, treatment trials etc. ...... I don't think that sort of division and resentment is at all funny.

Yes MAYBE, they found a nest of EU supporting fairies previously unknown to science which has halted the job? MAYBE. Brexit sent a plague of frogs and locusts which halted construction. MAYBE Brexit had caused a herd of flying Unicorn to appear in the middle of the proposed estate with banners warning the estate is doomed because of Brexit.

You can claim anything incredibly unlikely with 'maybe' put in front row of it so you can spread a little hysteria. But it doesn't make it true or mean you shouldn't be pulled up on it.

In reality the truth is that anybody with the most tenuous link to the construction industry could send out a text saying 'Labourers and Brickies needed, 8 month contract, immediate start' and have all the posts filled by tomorrow.
