How can anti racist white people halt this tsunami of racism and xenophobia that has been unleashed?

I'm horrified by the reports of people who are not white British being racially abused, being told to go back home etc since the results on Thursday. I know not all leavers voted for racist reasons, but I'm very scared about what this has unleashed. I feel quite defeated by it as its often irrational and is about scapegoating the other but it's very very real right now. I feel like we've just regressed to the 70's- early 80's and it was not a good place.

I just want to know, what can we do about it...?

papayasareyum that is becoming increasingly apparent.

I just hope they have the decency to be bloody ashamed of themselves when they've calmed down.

OfficiallyUnofficial · 26/06/2016 18:54

And yes agree with PP, the awful handling of the refugee crisis BY THE EU has increased the hate. Seemingly uncontrollable immigration has increased the problems for 2nd/3rd gen immigrants who were previously seen as valued members of society.

And in the case of my Cypriot friend has increased the racism of her by Kurdish incomers. Newsflash immigrants can be racist bastards too. Equal rights to be a git innit.

gunting · 26/06/2016 18:55

I don't think the far right will calm down though. The far right across Europe and in the US have celebrated this decision we have made. I don't think I'm being hysterical, it's a right wing revolution.

I found this interesting food for thought earlier - it's helping me understand why some people may have voted Leave:

Shock A poster has just written about her experiences of racism.

Daily, insidious racism.

She stated she's written about her personal, lived experiences prior to Friday.

MN response?

*As is denying it has anything to do with brexit.

Carry on denying though.*

FFS.

Newsflash: it's only racism if & when a middle class, left leaning, fair weather socialist tells you it is.

Know your place peasants.
Hmm

It doesn't even make sense considering the referendum was around the EU and one of the issues raised was the free movement of people from the EU states.

I think there is a very ugly atmosphere at the moment. I also think people feel they are entitled to discuss in a nearly violent way, things that should be approached in a considered way. Valid concerns hijacked and used as an excuse for abusive and worrying behaviour and language.

Disclaimer to first paragraph; Not that it is ever acceptable or is anything other than reprehensible in relation to anybody from anywhere.

Ouriana except there was a Kipper on tv saying we will start 'phased repatriation' of EU migrants.

Newes · 26/06/2016 19:07

But they can't, because they are not in a position to do so. Unlikely to ever be, so in true UKIP style they are talking out their backside.

MangoMoon · 26/06/2016 19:08

Oh gosh gunting, I must have missed the memo about UKIP suddenly having any say at all in how this country is run.

One MP does not a policy make.

228agreenend · 26/06/2016 19:09

My son went to training on Friday night. I looked around and saw black, White and mid-race. Yesterday, went to Costco and saw all nationalities shopping together without a backward glance. I think that's how we go,forward, by mixing and living alongside each other, and treating each other well.

gunting · 26/06/2016 19:11

Obviously UKIP have no power but how is saying this on the TV helping anyone. It's giving people like the chap who has made laminated cards saying 'we have left the EU, go home Polish vermin' and posting them through doors ammunition

Newes · 26/06/2016 19:13

Wankbadgers like that would do it anyway. It's incitement to racial hatred and hope they catch them and do the whole Ton Of Bricks thang on them.

Newes · 26/06/2016 19:14

slightly that is a really good link. Thank you.

Exactly Ouriana.
Well said.

The Daily Mail et al would have a field day with the rich pickings available on hysterical, nasty, small minded MN this weekend.

Tummyrumbled · 26/06/2016 19:49

I thought these type of news was just fiction but now I think it's true.

Today, my friend who works in a hospital was told by relatives that they want a "British nurse to look after their sick relative". They were also rude to non-white staff saying things that "I can't understand your accent" and making accusations about so many things.

TheOddity · 26/06/2016 19:49

I think there is ageism in statistics if we get to it. Basically they don't do statistics on how many black people voted to remain. Rightly so, it's racist. So categorising people by age is ageist, no matter how telling the results might seem.

Mistigri · 26/06/2016 19:55

The Ashcroft exit poll had some statistics on this actually - IIRC about two thirds of Asian voters were remain, and three quarters of black voters.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 26/06/2016 19:59

this should be reported on the news with both remain and leave campaign leaders (not UKIP) rejecting this and not play political point scoring over the issue

less media focus on we want foreigners out brigade this is stirring up the anger but it creates more stories

And to call out anyone on fb etc and anyone you know on such comments

Does make you think hard about where the racism is coming from. It does not make it any less disgusting or ignorant, but it helps to contextualise it and realise the risk might be in silencing the majority rather than trying to understand it. Please please do have a read because it is the first thing I have read that has made me feel a little better about Brexit.
