LOL- we're getting this too.

I'm registered in 2 areas, one has a rule you must offer first. yesterday we got:

Offered: roses tin (empty); wanted: double buggy

Okaaaaaaaaay!

There's been requests for cars with MOT on a regular basis, and today someone wanted a specific top of the range camera with accesories and a Sony MP3 player. WTF? DS1's comes from ASda, it does him well enough.

lailasmum · 18/01/2008 12:06

Our local freecycle went through a phase like this. Lots of wanteds for really expensive things. I think the moderators put a stop to it and it has returned to normal now.

The only slightly annoying think I keep experiencing is people who reply to my offers with 'please phone me to arrange collection', why on earth should I phone them, If they want an item i will supply them with my number and they can phone me, it got even more annoying recently as one of these people I did take the time to phone and they strung me along for ages saying they were going to turn up and never did after about three weeks of re arranging dates.

Katisha · 18/01/2008 12:07

There's someone on ours who is always asking for major items - drumkit, games consoles, (yes they fancied a Wii before Christmas), computers, etc. I wonder how much they actually get?
And today someone wants a ford sierra or a Merc "must be runners"...

ConnorTraceptive · 18/01/2008 12:09

It's not so much in the Wanted section, more those who only uses the board to snap up freebies.

(I have been lucky enough to be given some itmes for free and when I don't need them I will pass them on - so I don't begrudge people getting something for nothing)

bossykate · 18/01/2008 12:10

i recently offered some stuff for free here and one of the responses was clearly from someone who wanted to sell on i gave the stuff to charity instead.

Springflower · 18/01/2008 12:23

It annoys me when people ask me to phone them.

onepieceoflollipop · 18/01/2008 12:28

If I offer something I often get one or two immediate responses - then you hear nothing further or they take the time to actually read what you are offering and realise it is of no use to them. It's like a little kid putting up his hand "me, me I want it!"

One lady advertised some size 12 clothes - and specified that they should be collected by a size 12 lady! Don't blame her but I had vision of arriving and her saying "you look more like a 14 round the hips to me!"

HAR! onepieceoflollipop!

onepieceoflollipop · 18/01/2008 12:42

I personally gave some stuff to a lady who was pregnant - she and her dp turned up and she was genuinely pg = nice bump. So, next time she asked I gave to her again and she was really pleased. Incidentally her dp had given us a copy of the newspaper on the day our dd2 was born (we put a wanted for it) and he delivered it for us too.

To me, that is what freecycle is about. I have had lots of great (but essentially worthless to most people) things. Got a new mouse when I banged my other one in temper. (Obviously a mouse of the computer variety). Also got some parenting magazines which to my knowledge have now been read by about 3 people after me!

It's sad when people think freecycle is related to Father Christmas!

FlllightAttendant · 18/01/2008 12:43

Was about to ring the rspca there lollipop

captainmummy · 18/01/2008 12:47

Only prob with freecycle is the number os posts every day - we get wanted/offered/taken and recieved posts. And they could do with a 'holiday' facility, whereby you can opt out for 2 weeks, instead of coming back to 720 emails.

isaidno · 18/01/2008 12:51

doodletoyou - you need to join your local group through yahoo groups. I think the main website is freecycle.org, then you can find your closest group.

And yes, I get peed off with the same people asking for unrealistic items - not so bad lately, moderator must be onto it.

GrapefruitMoon · 18/01/2008 12:55

I just had a cheeky person asking if I would drop off the item to her - 10 miles away! - it's only something small so not like you would need a van to transport it!

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 18/01/2008 12:58

Oh tell me about it, we regularly have posts like:

Wanted: 28" or bigger flatscreen TV
Wanted: Xbox 360 and Games/PSP/Wii/Nintendo DS
Wanted: Caravan
Wanted: Car (must be fully working!)

The admin should stop it from happening but they don't seem to discriminate.

I am so pleased today, a lady has offered me two lovely sounding sofas to replace our old horrible broken down ones. There's just no way I could have ever afforded to buy new furniture so I'm really grateful (the sofa I am sitting on snapped in the middle some time ago and has been held up by a roasting tin ever since!) I feel like hugging the person who offered them, and I haven't even met her yet!

It's times like this I want to take them something to say thanks (wine?) do you think that goes against the freecycle ethos? it isn't payment.

rantinghousewife · 18/01/2008 12:59

We get a fair few wanteds on ours, drives me mad because they take up half of the flippin board! Wanted camera, must have at least 6mega pixels!
CM, you can alter the way you receive emails before you go on holiday, just go into groups setting and set it for no emails.

captainmummy · 18/01/2008 12:59

No no no grapefruit moon - the whole idea is that recipient comes and gets it! I got rid of a steam iron the other day - a bloke turned up for it, I imagine him going home to mrs-wifey and saying 'there you are love! New iron! Now you can do the ironing again!'

GrapefruitMoon · 18/01/2008 13:00

I know - I send her back a rather sarky reply!

captainmummy · 18/01/2008 13:04

Oh i didn't know that rantinghousewife - I have to say I find the site not very user-friendly. I did mention this in an email to the administrator, but it came back to be because the email wasn't headed 'wanted/offered or taken'!!!!!

BettySpaghetti · 18/01/2008 13:08

JamesAndTheGiantBanana -someone on freecycle really helped us out over Xmas when our fridge packed up on Boxing Day. DP took him some beers by way of a small thank you when he went to pick up the fridge -apparently the guy was really chuffed.
