That's nice bettyspaghetti, think I will do it then, after all she could have sold the (chocolate chenille cord 3 seater and 2 seater) sofas instead and probably made at least £150 or something.

Hmm, red or white wine? or should I take thorntons as they may not drink...

Sometimes it would be nice if peole would say thank you at all.

We offered a brand new mini trampoline, because it came free with a swing we bought and it's too dangerous for ds3 to haev about. Chap walked in, picked it up and walked out without one word! Not even hello! We also offered our old digi box when we got a new one, chap had put out a wanted. We waited for a few days for colection details and got an email 'I will come and get it tonigt was going to forget it because someone had a better one but he gave it to a mate so i mighta s well have yours'

Cor, thanks then

Eliza2 · 18/01/2008 14:48

Unbelievable.

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 18/01/2008 15:25

I'd have told him to f*ck right off! Hope you conveniently forgot to give him your address.

Best one we had was a couple of years ago in Newport, we were moving so needed to get rid of a large red chesterfield style metal action sofabed. An old couple came to collect it, and when they saw it they told me off, saying "you must be joking, that will never fit in our conservatory!!" as if I knew the dimensions of their bloody conservatory and was deliberately out there to dash their sofabed owning dreams. (they hadn't asked for measurements)

And then on his way out, the pissed off old fella spotted a portable tv on the floor and said "I'll take that though, if you're getting rid" - as if he was doing me a favour, cheeky sod. I wasn't.

StripeyMamaSpanx · 18/01/2008 15:34

On ours recently...

WANTED: Phone, any age or make, for my daughter to use for emergencies. Must have bluetooth for downloading ringtones.

lailasmum · 18/01/2008 15:37

oh my god that is just terrible behaviour. I think the freecycle ethos is really getting taken advantage of by rude opportunistic people, its a shame as so many people offering great things are getting fed up. After the amount of non collections and really rude emails I have had I have stopped offering stuff for the moment, its too much hassle.

StripeyMamaSpanx · 18/01/2008 15:43

Or this from today..

"ok i know there have been a lot of wanteds for laptops but i really
need one for my 11yr old daughter she has dyslexia and cannot read
write or spell properly i cannot get her a desktop pc as her room is
too small i reply to all the ones that are offered on freecycle and get
no luck at all. she does use this pc but its very rare as it is the
family computer and she has to share it with 4 other people so as you
can imagine she doesnt get a lot of time on it. she learns better with
the use of a computer than she does with pen and paper it doesn't
matter if its working or not as i can get my husband to fix it for her.
the school did start a scheme for the kids to be able to have laptops
where you brought them over a 3 yr period but this all fell through so
i am now riting this message as a plea to see if anyone out there can
help me as i said it doesn't matter if its working or not i just need a
basic one i have my fingers crossed and hope and pray that someone out
there can help me i cannot afford to buy her one out right as i am on
benefits at a lower rate so money is tight. thank you to everyone who
took the time to read my message and hope that somebody somewhere can
help me many thanks again xxxxx"

IMO that is begging and should not be allowed - especially as the woman who posted it only joined a few weeks ago, and a search of her posts shows she has already requested a moped and a violin. She's made no offers as yet though.

I think wanteds for laptops/xboxes/ps3s are taking the piss.

bossykate · 18/01/2008 16:36

that last one sounds genuine to me. using a keyboard rather than trying to write with a pen/pencil is considered very helpful to dyslexics. she's not asking for a state of the art one, not even one in fabbo working order.

sounds pukka to me.

oranges · 18/01/2008 16:41

but does it matter? you don't have to give someone a wii or a tv, just because they ask for one. and if you just want to get rid of it, does it matter who it goes too?

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 18/01/2008 19:14

It does matter to me who things go to, yes. I think a please and thankyou goes a long way, and it's the least you can do if someone gives you something for free and waits in for you to come and pick it up/invites you into their home etc

Gets to the point where you screen emails before responding to any so you can give the item to someone who asks nicely and deserves it, rather than the knobs who are like "I'll have it, call me to arrange collection"

I'd rather keep the item than give it to some thankless ingrate who would march in my house without so much as a hello. I gave away literally a room full of baby gear- pushchair, highchair, bath, clothes, toys, you name it. The woman who came for it didn't even look at me, or thank me, just shovelled it all into her car and fucked off. Its just rude!

I always make a point of thanking them in the arranging emails, in person when collecting the item, and in an email afterwards. Kindness is what keeps freecycle going, after all.

StripeyMamaSpanx · 18/01/2008 19:22

Ah well I add a signature to the bottom of all my offers - 'Good manners are also free'

It had an instant effect.

I think it matters who things go to - I would far rather give the violin I have offered recently to someone who actually uses Freecycle for its intended purpose (to keep things out of landfill) than to someone who treats it like a letter to Santa.

The problem I have with the post asking for a laptop is that it contravenes the rules - "If you are
posting a WANTED message, please don't include any reasons for why you
want an item, as this allows unscrupulous members to guilt-trip people
into parting with things they may not want to get rid of. Also, please
consider whether what you're requesting is too much to ask."

IMO its over the top with the 'poor me I'm on benefits' stuff.

OverworkedAndUnderpaid · 18/01/2008 19:24

I put a yoga mat & a girls bike on mine last week. A got an email immediately from someone wanting the yoga mat... give me her mobile number & told me to call her... I didn't. ffs why would I call her when she's the one wants my stuff!!!!!

But then the week before that I put on a kids bed guard, the lady who wanted it wasn't too far away from me & I just happened to be driving past her house that very afternoon..so I dropped it off with her dh. She text me to say thankyou etc.. couldn't have been nicer

BroccoliSpears · 18/01/2008 19:32

Oh god I'm always ranting on about this. Even started a thread about it recently! A couple of recent wanted ads on ours:

Wanted: V-tech Smile System as my daughter "cannot quite play on the playstation yet"

Wanted: Tv and dvd unit for my 5-year-old's bedroom.

[ranting old woman emoticon]

nortynamechanger · 18/01/2008 19:37

I am also getting a little fed up with Freecycle (freeloaders?) recently on ours recently we have had rquests for a horsebox and a Smallbone kitchen, none of your crappy MFI wanted there then!

The administrator did post and remind everyone of rules recently, including how to post. eg, put Offered, wanted etc, area and item in title - it's not rocket science is it?

I have given away loads of stuff including some fab modern glass froned (Heals) cabinets which I stated weighed a ton (50+kg each) and were large. Would need 2 strong people and a decent sized vehicle. A 50 somthing woman arrived with a fiesta (I kid you not) and said she thought she could just drag them (what accross my oak floor, are you kidding me?)

itsahardknocklife · 18/01/2008 19:40

I advertised a tv on freecycle last week. A chap got in contact. He was really nice at first and was going to come the next day. Then he mailed an hour after he should have been here to say he couldn't come but would come 4 days later. I said it had to go in the next two days as it was in the way and he started sending really abusive messages calling me all sorts of things! Needless to say I gave it to someone else who was very grateful and gave me some chocs to say thanks

BroccoliSpears · 18/01/2008 19:44

AND it really irritates me when people specify colour and make.

We really need a few tiles for a splashback = fair enough.

We really need a few tiles, they have to be handmade French and either blue or green to match our bathroom. Prefer smaller than 6x6". No border patterns please. GAHHHHHHH. BUY SOME THEN.

Blandmum · 18/01/2008 19:46

Wanted; Very exclusive round the world cruse for family of 4, will drive to pick up.

StripeyMamaSpanx · 18/01/2008 19:48

MB - I've got one lying around in the garage somewhere

Its a bit dusty though...

Eliza2 · 18/01/2008 19:48

I want a Chanel cocktail dress, size 10 or 12, preferably black and silk, for a dinner I'm going to.

Don't even think of trying to palm me off with something that's last season.

And I want some Blahniks, size 39. Jimmy Choos would do, I suppose.

I want to collect them at some time that suits me in the next fortnight.

Blandmum · 18/01/2008 19:51

I'll take it stripy, as long as you dust it for me first.

I have an empty tin of Quality street somewhere, shall we swap???

StripeyMamaSpanx · 18/01/2008 19:56

Throw in some wrappers and an iPod and you're on.

Oh, and can you deliver?

BroccoliSpears · 18/01/2008 19:57

AND AND AND... I once offered a HUGE tv stand. I gave dimensions, I gave an approximate weight, I linked to the bloody thing on the Ikea website and I said that someone would either need a very big car and to bring the tools to disassemble it, or would need a van or trailer to take it. I also said that if they wanted to collect it in the daytime there would need to be two of them (was heavily preggers at the time and not intending to lug it about).

The woman sent a cab for it. A TAXI CAB! She didn't even come herself. Just a regular, private hire cab. The driver said he was asked to pick up a stand, but had no idea that it was this enormous great thing.

When I emailed to say that (a) it wouldn't fit because I hadn't been pretending it was big for a larf, and (b) even if it had fitted, neither myself nor the elderly cab driver had felt inclined to lug it about for her, she never even got back to me.

RUDE!!!

Right. Posting on this thread is bad for my blood pressure.

Eliza2 · 18/01/2008 20:20

You didn't even offer to pay half the taxi fare. How can people be so mean?

Eliza2 · 18/01/2008 20:32

I still can't understand why nobody's given me a Paddington Chloe bag yet. I've been asking for weeks. You're all just tight.
