northernmumtobe · 12/11/2009 20:51

Hi,

Looking for some information on schools in the North east region. Preferably that go from pre-prep through to sixth form and are mixed.

So far, am considering
Teeside High
Barnard Castle School
queen ethelburga's

But only really started looking and open to suggestions.

thanks,

NMTB

Royal Grammar School Newcastle (day school only) is excellent as is St Peter's York (boarding and day school).

Both are mixed and have Pre-Prep and Prep.

CarGirl · 12/11/2009 21:10

Surely it's Teesside High?

What about Yarm Grammer?

Sorry used to live near them, no idea what they're like as schools nowadays but wonder if Teesside High still has the hideous blue & bron combo for uniform.

I still haven't come to terms with the fact that they are co-ed rather than Yarm Boys and TH all girls.

Incidentally, we are looking to move up to Yorkshire or North East in 2 years time so actively looking and have looked and visited. Me and DW are from up there so we know a lot of the good independent schools reasonably well.

RGS Newcastle and St Peter's are top of our list. We looked at Bootham York a few years ago and we felt was great for an unsporty or artistic child and is excellent for children with special needs.

Swedes2Turnips0 · 12/11/2009 21:16

I second RGS Newcastle. Barney is really lovely and friendly. Look at the former if your children are academically inclined and the latter if they are after pastoral care and rugby but not so much bothered by academic excellence.

I rate Yarm School as well.

Thank you, ABetaDad.

I'm also from the area, but been away for an awful long time now.

York more preferable to Newcastle for us.

So, will check out St. Peters.

Thankyou.

York isn't NE - York is North Yorkshire.

northernmumtobe · 12/11/2009 21:33

Well, it is in my definition.

But if it makes you feel better:

I'm looking for a school between York and (there or thereabouts) middlesborough). Not as far as Newcastle.

York and Harrogate are still NE England to me though.

Swedes - thats what I was thinking too. I am from York and DW from Newcastle so 'North East is quite well defined as being quite a lot further North and East than York.

northernmumtobe - have you looked at housing yet. We tried to move back 3 years ago and the lack of decent affordable housing in York killed it for us. A lot of South East retirement and second home money goes to York area and house prices are hideous.

CarGirl · 12/11/2009 21:36

Looking at independent in the NE is so different to the SE it's amazing!!

StealthPolarBear · 12/11/2009 21:37

yarm!

geordieminx · 12/11/2009 21:39

La Sagesse?(sp)

ABetaDad · 12/11/2009 21:40

If you are thinking of Harrogate then Ashville is a very nice co-ed school but lower down the league tables academically and a bit cheaper than St Peter's.

StealthPolarBear · 12/11/2009 21:41

and theres red house but that doesn't go to 6th form
dont let my grammar put you off - feeding while typinbg

CarGirl · 12/11/2009 21:41

Yarm/EAglescliffe is cheap as chips compared to Surrey, you can walk to school then too!

Visited for the first time in 10 years in the summer I almost wept at what I could afford up there and much better state schools to boot.

Took a while to get used to people talking to us, you know being friendly!! Also the lack of traffic.

ABetaDad · 12/11/2009 21:41

La Sagesse went out of business several years ago and its grounds sold off to a developer.

StealthPolarBear · 12/11/2009 21:43

and there's durham school

geordieminx · 12/11/2009 21:43

I still have my parking disc from 20 years ago - dh thought I was nuts when I dug it out and displayed it

Got nostalgic about the old fire station, dance studio, old church next to the CofE one and no Safeways!! I remember the supermarket that used to be there before Boyes...........began with a W

StealthPolarBear · 12/11/2009 21:56

CarGirl · 12/11/2009 22:02

Well I was born and bred in Eaglescliffe and born in '72 there was an independent shoe shop there too called Danby's the name of the original supermarket is going to bug me now!!
